Do guests have to wear yellow or green to a mehndi?
Do guests wear yellow to a mehndi? Not unless the family asks. Why yellow and green are traditional, when a theme applies, and bright colours to wear instead.
InspirationNo, unless the family asks
Guests do not have to wear yellow or green to a mehndi. They are the traditional colours of the occasion and are often worn by the bride and close family, but as a guest you can wear any bright, festive colour unless the family has asked everyone to follow a theme.
Our mehndi guest outfit ideas cover whole outfits, fabrics and dancing comfort. This article answers only the colour question.
Where yellow and green come from
Yellow is linked with the mayun or haldi days before a wedding, when a turmeric paste is applied to the bride, and the yellow carries over into the mehndi in many families. Green is the colour of henna leaves, the mehndi itself. Together they became the shorthand for the evening, and you will see them in decorations, cushions, trays and the bride’s outfit.
Because they are so strongly linked with the bride and her family, some guests deliberately avoid the exact shades the bride is wearing, so as not to be mistaken for part of the family in photos.
When a theme does apply
Some families do ask guests to follow a colour scheme. You will usually hear about it on the invitation or in a family group chat. If there is a theme, follow it; if you are unsure, ask the person who invited you.
- A family theme: sisters, cousins and friends of the bride may all wear one colour or a set palette.
- One side, one colour: in some weddings the bride’s side and the groom’s side each choose a colour.
- Guests asked to wear yellow or green: then any shade of either is fine, and a print that includes it counts.
- No theme mentioned: wear what you like within the bright, festive mood.
Bright alternatives that suit the night
A mehndi is colourful and lively, so the mood matters more than the exact colour. Orange, fuchsia, hot or rani pink, coral, turquoise, peacock blue, mustard, purple and multicoloured prints all fit. A white or cream suit with a bright dupatta also works.
Colour names such as rani pink or mehndi green vary between sellers and screens, so if you are ordering, send a photo or a swatch reference. Dark colours are a matter of family taste; see whether you can wear black to a Pakistani wedding for the details. For other pre-wedding nights, our dholki outfit ideas suggest the same kind of easy, bright clothes.
Ordering a mehndi outfit
If you are having an outfit made, tell us the event and the colour you have in mind, and how much embroidery you want. Detailed or statement work suits a mehndi; our custom embroidery page explains the levels, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote. Ask for a quote with your reference photos. Making takes 5 to 7 working days after approval and full payment, plus shipping, so order once the date is set.
Common questions
Will I look out of place if I do not wear yellow?
Very unlikely. At most mehndis guests wear every bright colour, and yellow and green are mainly worn by the bride and her close family.
Can I wear green to a mehndi?
Yes. Green is a traditional mehndi colour and perfectly fine for a guest. If you know the bride is in green, a clearly different shade avoids any confusion in photos.
Is white acceptable at a mehndi?
A plain white outfit can look quiet among all the colour, but white with a bright dupatta or colourful embroidery fits in well.
