Does a women’s waistcoat need lining?

Does a waistcoat need lining? Usually yes: it hides the inside, slides over a kameez and hangs straight. When an unlined koti works, and how its inside is finished.

Usually, yes

Most women’s waistcoats are better lined. A lining hides the inside seams and any stiffening in the fronts, lets the waistcoat slide over a kameez instead of catching on it, and helps it hang straight from the shoulders. An unlined waistcoat, or koti, works when the fabric is firm and does not fray, or when it is a sheer layer meant to look light, provided the inside edges are finished neatly.

This page is only about the inside. For how to style a waistcoat and measure for one, see our guide to layering a waistcoat or jacket over a kameez.

What a lining does on a waistcoat

A waistcoat is worn open more often than closed, so its inside is seen far more than the inside of a kameez. The lining does several jobs at once:

  • It gives a clean finish wherever the fronts swing open.
  • It stops textured fabrics gripping the kameez beneath, so the waistcoat sits where it should rather than riding up or twisting.
  • It covers the back of any embroidery, which would otherwise rub against the kameez.
  • It hides the interfacing that keeps the front edges and neckline crisp.
  • It adds a little body, so a soft fabric hangs straight instead of collapsing.

By fabric: lined or not

The outer fabric decides most of it. Winter fabrics nearly always want a lining; summer and sheer ones often do not.

  • [Velvet](/fabrics/velvet): lined. The pile clings to other fabrics and the cut edges shed.
  • [Khaddar](/fabrics/khaddar) and [karandi](/fabrics/karandi): lined, so their texture does not drag on the kameez sleeves and body.
  • Raw silk, jamawar and brocades: lined, as they fray easily and the woven floats on the back catch.
  • Cotton, cambric and linen: either. Unlined is cooler for a casual summer layer; a light cotton lining makes it look smarter.
  • Chiffon, organza and net: usually unlined, because the point is to see through them. The edges are finished finely instead.

Choosing the lining fabric

For a winter waistcoat worn over long sleeves, a smooth, slightly slippery lining helps it slide on and off. For a summer one worn over lawn, a thin cotton or voile lining breathes better. Colour is a chance for a small detail: a matching lining disappears, while a contrast lining in a colour from the kameez shows as a flash when the fronts move.

How an unlined waistcoat is finished inside

Without a lining, every edge needs its own finish. Facings, narrow pieces of the same fabric, are sewn behind the neckline, front edges and armholes so they turn in cleanly. Seams are bound with a strip of fabric or finished so they do not fray, and the hem is turned and stitched. On sheer fabric, narrow French-style seams and a rolled hem keep the inside as tidy as the outside.

A waistcoat is one of the pieces you can choose on the quote form. Say lined or unlined, and the lining colour, in your notes. With Fabric + Stitching the lining is included in the quote; to add a waistcoat to one of our designs, ask to customise a design.

Common questions

Does a lined waistcoat feel much warmer?

A cotton lining adds very little warmth. A satin-type lining feels warmer and smoother, which suits winter wear.

Should the koti lining match the kameez or the waistcoat?

Either works. Matching the waistcoat looks quiet; matching the kameez links the two pieces when the fronts fall open.

Can a waistcoat be made reversible?

A fully lined waistcoat with neat inside seams can be designed to wear either way. Ask for it in your notes, and whether it suits your fabrics is confirmed in the quote.
