How often should you wash an abaya?

How often to wash an abaya depends on what you wear beneath it, the climate and the fabric. A guide to wash intervals, airing and spot-cleaning between washes.

The short answer

Not after every wear, in most cases. An abaya worn over a full layer of clothes is an outer garment, like a coat or a cardigan, and it usually stays fresh for several wears; many women settle at somewhere around three to five wears between washes in mild weather. Wash it sooner when it has been against your skin, when you have sweated in it, when it smells of food or smoke, or when the hem and cuffs are visibly marked.

There is no rule to follow here, only a few things that shorten or lengthen the interval. They are worth knowing, because washing too often fades black and tires the cloth, while washing too rarely lets sweat and dust settle in.

What changes the interval

Five things decide how long an abaya can go.

  • What is underneath. Over a long-sleeved top and trousers, the abaya barely touches skin. Worn like a dress over a slip or a sleeveless layer, it takes the sweat itself and needs washing after a wear or two.
  • Heat and humidity. One summer afternoon outdoors counts for more than a week of cool, air-conditioned errands.
  • Fabric. Polyester-based abaya fabrics dry fast and resist marks, but they tend to hold on to body odour more than cotton or linen. Natural fibres let go of smells more easily in the wash but crease and show sweat marks sooner.
  • Where it has been. Cooking, barbecues, smoky rooms and long journeys leave smells that airing may not shift.
  • Colour. A pale abaya shows cuff and hem marks after one outing. A black one hides them, which is not the same as being clean.

Between washes: airing and spot-cleaning

Most of what an abaya picks up in a day is moisture and smell, and both leave on their own if you give them the chance.

  • Hang it on a wide hanger as soon as you take it off, outside the wardrobe, with space around it. Overnight is usually enough.
  • Air it in shade. Direct sun fades black quickly.
  • Let mud at the hem dry, then brush it off before it is rubbed in.
  • Spot-clean cuffs, neckline and hem with a damp cloth and a drop of mild detergent, then blot with a dry towel.
  • Pass a steamer over it to freshen the cloth and drop creases at once; pressing and storing abayas covers the method.

Signs it is time for a proper wash

Airing has limits. Wash the abaya when the underarms still smell after a night on the hanger, when the neckline or cuffs look darker or slightly shiny, when the hem has a grey line, or when the cloth feels limp or faintly sticky. Wash it after rain, sea air or a long crowded journey too. Spraying perfume over a smell is not a substitute: it builds up on synthetic cloth and can mark it.

When the time comes, wash gently; how to wash an abaya explains hand and machine washing without fading. Embellished abayas are the exception to any routine: spot-clean them and wash the whole garment as rarely as you can.

Rotation, underlayers and what you order

Wearing the same abaya every day forces frequent washing. Two or three in rotation let each one air properly between wears, and all of them last longer; our article on how many abayas you need works through the count. A cotton layer underneath takes the sweat so the abaya does not, as what to wear under an abaya describes.

If you are having a custom abaya made, tell us how you live. Daily wear in heat calls for a cloth that washes easily and dries overnight, while an occasion abaya can be more delicate. With Fabric + Stitching, ask how the proposed fabric should be washed before you approve the quote.

Common questions

Do you have to wash an abaya after every wear?

No, unless it was worn next to the skin, you sweated in it or it is visibly dirty. Worn over a full layer of clothes in mild weather, airing it overnight between wears is enough for several outings.

Does washing an abaya often damage it?

Frequent washing fades black and dark colours, loosens embellishment and wears out fine fabrics sooner. Washing gently, inside out, in cool water and only when needed keeps an abaya looking new for longer.

How do I freshen an abaya without washing it?

Hang it in moving air in the shade overnight, steam it lightly, and spot-clean the cuffs, neckline and hem. If a smell remains after that, it needs a wash.
