What to wear under an abaya, in heat and in cold
What to wear under an abaya all year: inner dresses, slips and trousers, breathable layers for heat, warm layers for cold, and how to stop cling and static.
InspirationThe layer that makes an abaya comfortable
Under an abaya, most people wear either a simple long inner dress or a long top with loose trousers, chosen to suit the season: light cotton or viscose in heat, thermals or fine wool in cold. The layer underneath decides how comfortable you are far more than the abaya itself. It controls warmth, absorbs sweat, stops the abaya clinging, and gives coverage if the abaya is sheer, open at the front, or blown open by wind.
Thinking about that layer when you choose your abaya fabric pays off. A light nida over cotton feels very different from the same nida over polyester.
Everyday foundations
- Inner dress: a plain long dress, often sleeveless or short-sleeved, in an opaque fabric. The neatest option under a sheer or open abaya.
- Slip: a thin, smooth full-length slip that lets the abaya glide and adds coverage without bulk.
- Top and wide trousers: a long-sleeved top with palazzo or straight trousers. Practical for work and travel.
- Kurta or kameez: many people simply wear a light kurta and trousers underneath; our article on modest dressing with sleeves, necklines and lengths has ideas.
Layers for heat
In hot weather, the inner layer should do the work that synthetic abaya fabrics cannot: absorb sweat and dry. Fine cotton, lawn, voile, linen and viscose are all good choices. Keep the layer loose rather than tight, and choose short sleeves or sleeveless if the abaya covers the arms. Pale colours underneath are fine with an opaque abaya and avoid trapping heat.
Indoors, the same light layer keeps you comfortable when the air conditioning is fierce. For more on fabrics for heat, see our guide to Gulf summer abaya fabrics.
Layers for cold
In winter, it is more effective to wear thin warm layers under an abaya than to rely on a very heavy abaya. Thermal tops and leggings, a long jersey dress, a fine merino layer or a soft knit all add warmth without bulk. Keep the layers close to the body so the abaya still falls straight, and avoid chunky knits under sleeves, which pull the abaya out of shape.

Cling, static and peeking hems
Static is common when a polyester abaya meets polyester underneath in dry air. Natural fibres underneath reduce it; so does a little moisture, such as lightly misting the inside of the abaya. Rough knits underneath can also make a smooth abaya pill over time.
An inner dress should finish a little shorter than the abaya, so it never shows at the hem when you walk or climb stairs. If the abaya is open at the front, the inner layer is on view, so choose its colour and neckline deliberately. Our article on chiffon and georgette abayas explains how the colour underneath changes a sheer layer.
Ordering an abaya with matching pieces
When you ask for a custom abaya, an inner dress, trousers or a scarf can be quoted together with it, using one set of measurements, so the colours and lengths are planned as a set. You can do this through Fabric + Stitching, or send your own fabric for every piece with Stitching Only once we have confirmed it.
Customers in warm places such as Sharjah often choose a cotton inner dress with a nida abaya. Start on the quote form and list every piece you want in your notes.
Common questions
What do you wear under an abaya in summer?
A loose layer in a breathable fabric such as cotton, lawn, linen or viscose. It absorbs sweat and keeps you comfortable both outdoors and in air-conditioned rooms.
Do I need an inner dress with my abaya?
Not always. An opaque, closed abaya can be worn over everyday clothes. An inner dress is most useful under sheer or open-front abayas, or when you want a coordinated look.
How do I stop my abaya from clinging?
Wear a natural-fibre layer or a smooth slip underneath, and avoid polyester on polyester in dry air. A light mist of water inside the abaya also reduces static.
