How to remove tailor’s chalk marks from a new outfit

How to remove tailor’s chalk from fabric: what marking lines on a new outfit are, how to brush or wash each type out, and why not to iron over them first.

Most marks brush or wash straight out

Ordinary tailor’s chalk brushes off with a soft brush or disappears in the first gentle wash. The one rule is not to iron over any mark until you know what it is, because heat can set wax chalk and some marking pens so firmly that they stay.

Tailors and dressmakers mark fabric to show where to cut, sew, place a pocket or make a buttonhole. Sometimes a faint line is still visible near a hem, a dart or a seam on a newly made outfit, especially on dark fabric in daylight.

Know your mark

Different marking tools behave very differently once they meet heat or water:

  • Clay tailor’s chalk: a powdery line in white, blue, yellow or pink. It sits on the surface and is the easiest to remove.
  • Wax chalk: firmer and slightly shiny. On wool it melts away under a steam iron, but on cotton, silk and synthetics it can leave a greasy line.
  • Water-soluble marker: usually blue. It comes out with plain cold water.
  • Air-erasable marker: usually purple. It fades on its own over time, faster in humid air.
  • Heat-erasable pen: vanishes under an iron, but can reappear in the cold and sometimes leaves a pale ghost line on dark fabric.

Removing each type

Follow the garment’s care label, and test on an inside seam allowance first if you are using water on silk or a delicate fabric.

  • Powder chalk: shake the garment, then brush with a soft clothes brush, or rub gently with a scrap of the same fabric. Any trace left usually goes with a dab from a damp white cloth, or in the first wash.
  • Wax chalk on wool: hold a steam iron just above the line, or press through a damp cloth.
  • Wax chalk on other fabrics: dab with a little washing-up liquid in lukewarm water, rinse, then wash as the label says. Do not iron first.
  • Blue water-soluble marks: dab or rinse with plain cold water before using any detergent or heat, as both can fix some of these inks.
  • Purple air-erasable marks: wait, or dab with cold water. Never iron over them.
  • Heat-erasable marks: test the iron on one end; if a ghost line stays, a wash usually helps more than more heat.

Taking care with delicate fabrics

On lawn and cotton, marks nearly always wash out easily. On silk, chiffon and georgette, work gently with a barely damp cloth, because patchy wetting can leave a ring; water marks on silk explains why. On velvet, brush lightly in the direction of the pile rather than rubbing. Near embroidery, spot clean around the stitching rather than over it.

If you plan to wash the outfit anyway before wearing it, simply brush off what you can and let the wash do the rest. Washing lawn and embroidered suits covers that wash.

On a new outfit from us

Common questions

Does tailor’s chalk wash out?

Clay-based tailor’s chalk washes out easily, and most of it brushes off before washing. Wax chalk can leave a greasy line on fabrics other than wool, which needs a little washing-up liquid before a normal wash.

Can I use a baby wipe on a chalk mark?

It is better not to. Many wipes contain oils or lotions that leave a mark of their own, particularly on silk and dark fabric. A clean white cloth dampened with plain water is safer.

Why did the mark come back after I ironed it away?

It was probably made with a heat-erasable pen. The ink turns invisible when hot but can return when the fabric gets cold. Washing the garment normally removes it more reliably than ironing.
