Water marks on silk and raw silk: why they form
How to remove water stains from silk: why a drop of water leaves a ring on silk and raw silk, what is safe to try at home, and when to take it to a dry cleaner.
InspirationA ring, not a stain
A drop of water leaves a mark on silk because, as it dries, it carries finish, fine dirt and sometimes loose dye to its edge and leaves them there as a ring. On raw silk the water can also change the surface texture where it lands. A light ring can sometimes be evened out at home by damping the whole area so there is no edge, but rings on raw silk, dark or bright silk, and anything embroidered are best handed to a dry cleaner.
Why silk marks so easily
Watch a spilt drop of tea dry on a table and you see the same thing: a pale centre with a darker outline. Water moves outwards as it evaporates, taking whatever it has dissolved with it. On silk, that might be a sizing finish, traces of soap or perfume, minerals from tap water, or a little dye that was not fully fixed. The outline is where they all end up.
Silk fibres also swell slightly when wet, and their smooth surface is what gives silk its sheen. If the patch dries in a different position from the rest, light reflects off it differently, so it looks like a mark even though nothing has been added. Raw silk, with its slubbed, slightly dry handle, shows this most. Our cotton silk and raw silk guide describes the fabrics themselves.
Before you try anything
Read the care label. If it says dry clean only, take that seriously, as a home attempt can make a small ring into a large one. If you do try, these rules keep the risk down:
- Test on a hidden area first, such as an inside seam allowance or hem.
- Use distilled or deionised water, which has no minerals to leave a new ring.
- Never rub; silk fibres scuff and go dull.
- Do not press a hot iron onto a damp spot or aim a hairdryer at it, as fast drying sets an edge.
What you can try at home
The idea is to remove the edge by wetting the whole panel evenly, so it all dries together. Lay the piece flat on a clean white towel. Mist the entire panel lightly with distilled water, from seam to seam, until it is evenly damp, not wet. Let it dry flat, away from heat and sun, and do not move it while it dries. Once dry, press from the back on a low to medium setting through a cloth.
On raw silk, steam is often gentler than misting. Hold the panel in the steam from a garment steamer, keeping the head moving and away from the surface, until it is evenly damp, then let it dry the same way. Results vary with the dye and finish, so stop if the test patch changes colour.
A fresh splash is easiest of all: blot it straight away with a dry white cloth, then let the garment hang so the area dries quickly and evenly.
When to hand it to a dry cleaner
Go to a professional if the ring is on raw silk and larger than a coin, if the silk is dark or a vivid colour where dye may move, if the piece is lined or embroidered, or if the ring is mixed with another stain such as perfume or sweat. Tell the cleaner it is a water mark and what caused it.
Silk is a lovely choice for occasions, and knowing how it behaves helps you choose. Our guide to choosing fabric explains how fabric is agreed for an order. With Fabric + Stitching we propose fabric to suit how you will wear and clean it; ask for a quote and mention any concerns about water marks.
Common questions
Will washing the whole garment remove water marks?
If the label allows hand washing, an even wash can remove rings, because the whole piece dries together. Raw silk may lose some of its crisp texture in water, though, so test first and follow the label.
Why did my iron leave water spots on silk?
A steam iron on a low setting often spits drops of water before it is hot enough to make steam. Use a dry iron on silk, empty the water tank, and press through a cloth from the back.
Are water marks on silk permanent?
Often not. A ring made of finish or minerals can usually be evened out by careful damping or by a dry cleaner. If loose dye has moved to the edge, the mark may be permanent.
