Is chiffon cool to wear in summer?

Is chiffon good for summer? Silk chiffon is, but polyester chiffon can feel clammy, and the lining decides comfort. How to wear chiffon in heat without overheating.

Sometimes, and the lining decides

Chiffon can be comfortable in summer, but not all chiffon and not in every form. Silk chiffon wears well in the heat. Polyester chiffon, which is most of what is sold, lets air through but takes up almost no sweat, so it can feel clammy on a humid day. In a kameez or dress, the lining underneath usually matters more to your comfort than the chiffon itself.

Why thin is not the same as cool

A fabric feels cool when two things happen: air moves through it, and moisture moves away from your skin. Chiffon is very good at the first. It is a light, open weave of fine twisted yarns, and a breeze passes straight through it.

Polyester is poor at the second. The fibre absorbs very little water, so sweat stays on the skin or sits in the thin gap between skin and fabric. In dry heat with moving air, polyester chiffon can feel perfectly pleasant. In damp heat, or sitting still in a warm room, it can feel sticky. Silk takes moisture into the fibre and lets it evaporate, which is why silk chiffon stays more comfortable, though it is dearer and needs gentler care.

The layer underneath

Because chiffon is sheer, a chiffon kameez, dress or pair of trousers is lined, and the lining sits against your skin. A polyester or satin-finish lining under polyester chiffon gives you two layers that do not absorb anything, and that is when chiffon feels hot.

A cotton lining changes the picture. Fine lawn, voile or another light cotton under the chiffon soaks up moisture and keeps the outfit far cooler, while the chiffon still gives the look. A half lining, covering the bodice only, lightens things further. Our guide to lining for hot and cold climates compares lining fabrics in more detail.

Where chiffon works in hot weather

Used in the right places, chiffon is a good summer fabric. It is least comfortable as a closely fitted, fully polyester-lined kameez worn all day outdoors.

  • Dupattas: a loose chiffon dupatta adds colour and coverage with almost no warmth, because air circulates under it.
  • Sleeves and overlays: sheer chiffon sleeves over a cotton kameez keep arms covered while staying airy.
  • Loose dresses and tunics: a relaxed cut over a cotton lining lets air move, unlike a close fit.
  • Evenings and air-conditioned rooms: a chiffon outfit for a dinner or an indoor gathering avoids the worst of the day’s heat.

Summer or winter fabric?

Chiffon turns up in both. In summer it is the dressier option beside lawn; in winter it appears as a dupatta over a warmer suit or as sleeves on an occasion outfit. On its own it gives almost no insulation, so it is never the warm layer. For hot-weather fabrics in general, see our guides to Gulf heat and humid weather, and our chiffon guide for stitching it.

When you order, say that the outfit is for warm weather and ask for a cotton lining. With Fabric + Stitching we agree both the chiffon and the lining with you before cutting, and you can request a quote here.

Common questions

Is chiffon breathable?

Air passes through it easily because the weave is open and light. Polyester chiffon does not absorb sweat, though, so it breathes in a breeze but can feel damp in humid, still air.

Is georgette cooler than chiffon in summer?

Not usually. Georgette is a little heavier and most of it is also polyester, so the same rule applies: a cotton lining and a loose cut do more for comfort than switching between the two.

Can a chiffon outfit be worn without lining in summer?

A dupatta or sleeves, yes. A kameez, dress or trousers in chiffon are sheer, so they are normally lined or worn over a cotton slip, which is also the cooler choice.
