Kameez baggy at the bust? What to ask for
Top too big in the bust? Why standard shaping leaves spare fabric on a smaller bust, how to measure for it, and what to ask for so the chest of a kameez lies smooth.
InspirationThe shaping is drafted for a different bust
A kameez is baggy at the bust when its shaping, usually darts, was made for a fuller bust than yours. Ready-made clothes and many basic patterns build in room for an average cup size, so on a smaller bust that room has nothing to fill. The fix on a made-to-measure order is to ask for less shaping and a closer upper chest, not a smaller size overall, which would make the shoulders and hips tight.
It is a very ordinary fit question. Plenty of people who are a standard size at the hips and shoulders find that every ready-made kurta has a little pocket of fabric at the front.
What the extra fabric looks like
Try on a kameez that shows the problem and look at it from the front and from the side. The common signs are:
- Empty darts: the point of each dart stands out as a small cone, because there is nothing behind it.
- A soft fold below the bust: the fabric collapses into a horizontal crease at the under-bust line.
- A gaping front neckline or armhole: the spare fabric above the bust has nowhere to go and lifts away.
- A tent effect from the side: the front hangs forward of the body from the chest down.
- Plenty of room across the chest but a good fit elsewhere: a sign that the shaping, not the size, is the issue.
Three measurements that tell the tailor
One bust measurement is not enough to show the difference, because it mixes your frame and your bust shape together. Give three, all taken over the bra you will wear with the outfit:
Full bust round the fullest point, upper bust high under the arms and above the bust, and under bust just below it. The gap between full and upper bust is what shows how much shaping you need; when it is small, darts can be shallower or left out. Add the distance from your shoulder down to the bust point, so any shaping that remains ends in the right place. Our guide to measuring for a shalwar kameez shows where to place the tape, and the page on body and garment measurements explains why we ask for body figures.
What to ask for
Once the measurements are clear, a few plain requests do the rest. Not every one suits every design, which is why they are best written as preferences in your notes:
- Smaller darts, or none: shaping taken from the side seams instead, so the front stays flat.
- A closer upper chest: less ease above the bust, which also keeps the neckline and armholes from gaping.
- A straight or gently A-line cut: see A-line vs straight; both look clean without much bust shaping.
- Detail at the front: a yoke, pintucks or neckline embroidery use the space well; yokes and panels shows how.
- A softer fabric: lawn and cambric lie closer to the body than a stiff jacquard.
Sending it with your order
Add your three bust measurements and a line such as “bust smaller than my frame, ready-made darts stand empty” to a custom stitching enquiry. If you have a kameez that fits well at the chest, measure it flat and include those figures too. The measurements and design are agreed in writing before anything is cut, and then making takes 5 to 7 working days after approval and full payment. Request your quote when you are ready.
Common questions
Should I just order a smaller size?
Usually not. A smaller size takes width out of the shoulders, back and hips as well as the bust, which often makes those areas tight. Keeping your real measurements and asking for less bust shaping is the cleaner answer.
Does a kameez always need bust darts?
No. Many kameez and kurtas, especially relaxed or A-line cuts, are made without front darts. A small bust often suits a dartless front with shaping at the side seams.
Which bra should I wear when I measure?
The one you expect to wear with the outfit most often. A padded bra and an unpadded one can change the full bust figure noticeably, so mention which you used.
