When the lining shrinks differently from the kameez

Lining shrunk after washing? Why a kameez and its lining can shrink by different amounts, the signs to look for, what pressing can fix and what to ask next time.

Why the two layers move apart

A lining and the kameez it sits in are often different fabrics, and different fabrics shrink by different amounts in their first washes. Cotton and lawn shrink a little, viscose can shrink more, and polyester barely shrinks at all. Because the two layers are joined at the neck, armholes and seams, any difference shows up as puckering, a lining peeping out below the hem, or a kameez that suddenly feels tighter.

Heat widens the gap. A hot wash or a tumble dryer shrinks cotton further while leaving a polyester lining as it was, and the first wash usually does more than any that follow.

Reading the signs

Which layer has moved shows in the way the kameez now sits.

  • Lining showing below the hem: the outer fabric has shrunk more than the lining, common with a cotton or lawn kameez over a polyester lining.
  • Outer fabric puckered at the hem or seams: the lining has shrunk more and is holding the kameez up from inside, typical of a cotton lining in a synthetic outer.
  • Kameez tighter across the body or shorter: both layers have shrunk, or the lining has and the outer can no longer hang freely.
  • Diagonal ripples near the side seams: the layers have shrunk by different amounts across their width as well as their length.

What pressing can and cannot fix

Some of what you see may be creasing rather than true shrinkage, so press before you decide. Turn the kameez inside out, press or steam the lining first and then the outer fabric from the reverse, at the temperature the label allows, easing each layer back to length with your hands as you go. A damp pressing cloth helps cotton relax a little, and mild puckering often settles.

Pressing cannot undo real shrinkage. If the lining still hangs a finger’s width below the hem, or the outer is still drawn up, the difference is now permanent. A tailor near you can usually shorten a lining hem, or release it from the kameez hem so it hangs free. We do not alter existing clothes, but for most tailors it is a simple job.

Washing it from now on

Once the first shrinkage has happened, later washes usually change little, as long as heat stays low. Wash cool, skip the tumble dryer, and dry the kameez on a hanger, drawing the hem straight while it is damp so both layers settle at the same length. Our guide to drying suits without fading or shrinking has more on this.

What to mention when you order next time

Most of this can be headed off before the fabric is cut. Whether you send your own fabric through Stitching Only or order through Fabric + Stitching, these points are worth raising in your quote request. If you are unsure whether you want a lining at all, start with does my kameez need lining.

  • Whether the outer fabric and lining have already been washed; our article on pre-washing fabric before stitching explains the choice.
  • How you usually wash your clothes, so the lining can be chosen to behave like the outer fabric. Choosing lining for an unstitched suit covers matching fibre and weight.
  • Whether you would like the lining left free at the hem, so the two layers can move independently. Ask for it, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design.

Common questions

Can I fix a lining that hangs below my kameez myself?

If you sew, yes: unpick the lining hem, turn it up until it sits just above the outer hem, and stitch it again. Otherwise a tailor near you can do it quickly.

Why did the lining shrink but not the outer fabric?

The lining is probably cotton or viscose and the outer a synthetic such as polyester chiffon or georgette, which does not shrink in an ordinary wash.

Will the lining keep shrinking with every wash?

Usually not by much after the first few washes, as long as you keep heat low. Hot washes and tumble drying can cause more.
