Why do sleeveless armholes gape, and how to prevent it
Sleeveless armhole gaping happens when an armhole shaped for a sleeve is left without one, or the bust opens the front edge. What to specify so it lies flat.
InspirationWhy sleeveless armholes gape
A sleeveless armhole gapes when its edge is longer than the part of the body it has to lie against. There are two main reasons: the armhole was shaped as if a sleeve were going to be sewn in, so it is too deep and too wide to stand alone, or a fuller bust is pushing the front of the kameez outwards and the spare length escapes at the armhole edge. Both are prevented at the cutting stage, by asking for an armhole drawn for a sleeveless garment and for shaping at the bust.
An armhole made for a sleeve is the wrong shape without one
On a sleeved kameez the armhole is only half of a joint. It is cut with room for the arm to move inside the sleeve, and it reaches out to the shoulder point, where the sleeve takes over. The sleeve covers the underarm, so nobody sees how low it sits.
Remove the sleeve and that armhole is exposed. It sits low enough to show the side of your bra, it stands away from the body because the extra room now has no purpose, and its outer end can stick up like a small wing at the shoulder. A sleeveless armhole is therefore drawn differently: a little higher under the arm, closer to the body at the side, and usually ending slightly inside the shoulder point. The differences are small, often a centimetre or two in each place, but the edge is in full view, so they count.
How the bust opens the front edge
If the gap is at the front, between the bust and the shoulder, the cause is usually the bust and not the armhole. A fuller bust needs more fabric length at the front than a flat pattern provides. When there is no shaping to take up that length, it has to go somewhere, and the nearest open edge is the armhole. Pinch the gap closed with your fingers and you will see that you have made a small dart pointing at the bust. That dart is what was missing.
So the remedy for a front gape is shaping: a small dart from the side seam or the armhole, or a shaped seam, sized from your measurements. Taking the side seam in does not cure it, because the surplus is in the length of the edge, not the width of the kameez. Our article on why a kameez pulls across the bust describes the same mechanism from the other direction.
Edges that stretch
An armhole is a curve, and curves cut across the weave stretch easily. If the edge is handled a lot during sewing, or finished with nothing firm, it grows, and a longer edge gapes. Sleeveless armholes are normally finished with a facing, a binding or piping, and in sheer fabrics a lining holds the edge. Soft, slippery cloth needs the firmer finishes, so ask how the armhole will be finished when you request your quote.
What to specify for a sleeveless kameez
On our quote form, “Sleeveless” is one of the sleeve choices, and the sleeveless style page shows the options. Add the points below to your notes. To change the sleeves on one of our designs, use customise a design; for anything else, custom stitching explains how to order.
- A closer armhole: say you want it high enough to cover your bra at the side. Our guide to how an armhole should fit describes the height to aim for.
- Shoulder width: a wider shoulder covers bra straps and keeps the edge on firm ground; a cut-in shoulder is more open. Decide which you want and say so.
- Bust shaping: if sleeveless tops usually gape at the front on you, ask for a small dart. We confirm what is possible on your fabric and design.
- Measurements: armhole, shoulder, bust and high bust, taken in the bra you will wear with it. All but the high bust are on the size guide.
- A reference: a photo of yourself in a sleeveless top, whether it gapes or behaves, shows more than a description.
Common questions
Should I order a smaller size to stop sleeveless armholes gaping?
No. A smaller size tightens everything, the bust included, and can make a front gape worse because the bust pushes the fabric out even more. The armhole needs to be the right shape and the front needs shaping, which is a matter of cut and not of size.
Can a gaping armhole on a top I own be put right?
Often it can be improved. A tailor near you may take in the side seam under the arm, add a small dart at the front or lift the shoulder seam slightly, depending on where the gap is and how the edge is finished. We do not alter existing clothes.
Will a sleeveless kameez work with an ordinary bra?
Yes, if the armhole is cut high enough at the side and the shoulder is wide enough to cover the straps. Tell us which kind of bra you plan to wear, because strap position varies and the shoulder width is decided around it.
