Stitched vs unstitched: what an “unstitched set” means and which to buy

What unstitched fabric is, what a 2 or 3-piece set contains, how it compares with pret, and how to get one stitched if you live in the UK, Europe or the USA.

What “unstitched” means

An unstitched suit is fabric, not a garment. Pakistani brands sell a large part of their lawn, cambric, khaddar and embroidered collections this way: the fabric is printed, dyed or embroidered in the shape of an outfit, then packed as separate lengths for you to have tailored to your own measurements.

A 3-piece unstitched set contains a kameez length (often with an embroidered neckline or border already worked into it), a trouser or shalwar length, and a dupatta. A 2-piece has the kameez plus either the trouser length or the dupatta, so check the label to see which. A 1-piece is the kameez fabric alone.

Stitched, pret and ready-to-wear

Stitched, pret and ready-to-wear all mean the same thing: the outfit is already sewn in standard sizes (XS to XL, or UK 8 to 16). You buy it, try it on, and perhaps have it altered. It is quicker and often cheaper at the point of sale, but the neckline, sleeve length, kameez length and fit were decided by the brand.

Which is better?

  • For fit: unstitched, every time. The outfit is cut to your measurements, so sleeves end where you want them and nothing pulls across the bust or hips.
  • For speed: stitched. Nothing to arrange after you buy.
  • For Eid and gatherings: unstitched suits give you the neckline, dupatta finish and lining you want; stitched suits are fine if you need something quickly.
  • If you live outside Pakistan: unstitched packs post easily and avoid size-chart guesswork, provided you have a tailor you trust. That is where we come in, for customers in the UK, Europe and the USA.

Getting an unstitched suit stitched, wherever you live

Buy the suit (Belgrave Road, Green Street, Southall, Cheetham Hill, a South Asian shop in Europe or the USA, or a brand’s online store), then ask for a Stitching Only quote with photos of the fabric and your measurements. Before you post anything, we confirm the fabric is suitable and enough for the design, and how to send it to us in Pakistan. The neckline, sleeves and length are agreed in writing, then we stitch the suit to measure and ship it to you. You receive a written quote first.

Start on the unstitched suit stitching page, look up your label in our brand guides, or go straight to a Stitching Only quote.

Common questions

Is unstitched cheaper than stitched?

The fabric usually costs less than the equivalent stitched suit, but you then pay for tailoring. For a plain lawn suit the total is often similar; for embroidered and formal pieces, unstitched plus made-to-measure stitching usually gives a far better result for the money.

How much fabric is in a 3-piece unstitched suit?

Typically around 2.5 to 3 metres for the kameez, 2.5 metres for the trousers and 2.5 metres for the dupatta, though brands vary and the pack label states the exact lengths.
