Tailor, dressmaker or seamstress: what is the difference?
Tailor vs dressmaker vs seamstress: what each word means, where a darzi fits among them, and which one to search for when you want an outfit made.
InspirationThree words, three jobs
A tailor traditionally cuts and makes structured clothes such as suits, coats and trousers. A dressmaker makes women’s clothes, such as dresses, blouses and skirts, for individual customers. A seamstress is a woman who sews for a living, often stitching or altering garments that someone else has designed and cut. In everyday speech the three overlap, and many people do all of these jobs under one name.
The differences are worth knowing because they change what you find when you search.
What each word covers
Each word grew out of a different kind of work.
- Tailor: from an old French word for a cutter. The craft grew up around men’s suits and coats: cloth shaped with canvas, padding and pressing so that it holds a form. Today the word also covers anyone who alters clothes, which is why a high-street “tailor” may only shorten hems and take in seams.
- Dressmaker: someone who makes women’s garments to order. The work is softer than a jacket: fabric that drapes, gathers and flows, shaped by seams and darts. A dressmaker usually handles the whole job, from measuring and cutting to the final press.
- Seamstress: the word describes the sewing itself. A seamstress may work in a workroom stitching what a cutter has prepared, or take in repairs and alterations at home. The old male form, seamster, has almost vanished; sewer, sewist and machinist are the neutral words in use now.
Where a darzi sits
Darzi is the Urdu and Hindi word for a tailor, and it is broader than any of the three English words. A darzi measures, cuts and sews; makes shalwar kameez, kurtas and blouses as readily as trousers; and usually works from fabric the customer brings. A “ladies’ darzi” or “ladies tailor”, in South Asian English, is one who makes women’s clothes, which a British speaker would call a dressmaker.
So the same person might be a darzi in Lahore, a ladies tailor on a shop sign in Dubai and a dressmaker in a London directory. Our guide to what an online darzi is explains how that service works without a shop counter.
Which word to search for
Match the word to the job. Whatever the sign says, ask what the person actually does: makes from scratch, alters, or both, and for which kinds of garment.
- A shalwar kameez, kurta or abaya made for you: try “ladies tailor”, “Asian tailor”, “dressmaker”, “made to measure” or “online darzi”. Plain “tailor” brings up mostly suits and alterations.
- A dress or skirt made from a picture: “dressmaker” or “made to measure dress”.
- A hem taken up or a seam let out: “alterations”, “alterations tailor” or “seamstress”.
- A structured jacket or coat: “tailor” or “bespoke tailor”.
What that makes us
By these definitions we are closest to a dressmaker, or a ladies’ darzi who works online. We make women’s clothing to measure in Pakistan, from shalwar kameez and kurtas to abayas, dresses and co-ords, and ship it worldwide. You can send your own design or start from one of ours, and choose whether we supply the fabric or you do. The custom stitching page sets out the whole service.
Two things we are not. We do not alter clothes you already own, so for a hem or a zip a tailor near you is the right person; our comparison of online tailoring and a tailor nearby is frank about when each suits. And we have no shops, studios or try-on appointments outside Pakistan, because everything is arranged online. If a made-to-measure outfit is what you are after, ask for a quote.
Common questions
Is a dressmaker more skilled than a seamstress?
They are different jobs, not ranks. A dressmaker usually takes a garment from measurements to finished piece, including the cutting. A seamstress may be an expert at sewing and alterations without doing the pattern work. Plenty of people do both.
What is the male word for seamstress?
Historically seamster, but it is rarely used now. A man who sews professionally is usually called a tailor, a sewer or a machinist, depending on the work.
What is a darzi called in English?
A tailor. Because a darzi also makes women’s clothes from the customer’s own fabric, dressmaker or ladies tailor is often the closer match for someone who sews shalwar kameez.
