Umbrella and flared abayas: volume, panels and movement

What makes an umbrella abaya different from a flared or A-line abaya, how the panels and hem are cut, who the full shape suits and what to ask for in your quote.

What umbrella and flared mean

A flared abaya widens from the bust or waist into a full, swinging skirt. An umbrella abaya takes that further: it is cut in many tapering panels, so the hem forms a near-circle and the fabric falls in deep, even folds all the way round, like an open umbrella seen from above. Both are dressier and more dramatic than a straight or gentle A-line cut, and both move beautifully when you walk or turn.

The idea is familiar from Pakistani frocks: the kalidar or umbrella frock uses the same panelled construction, as our kalidar frock page shows. On an abaya the panels run to the ankle or floor. If you want this shape, ask for it on a custom abaya and we confirm in your quote how it will work with your fabric.

Flared, umbrella or A-line?

  • A-line: widens gradually from the shoulders; the hem is only moderately wider than the hips. See our A-line abaya guide.
  • Flared: close through the top, then opening into a full skirt from the bust or waist.
  • Umbrella: many narrow panels, each wider at the hem, giving the fullest and most even folds.
  • Circle cut: the skirt is cut as a full or half circle rather than in panels; similar effect, fewer seams.

Panels, seams and where the flare starts

The number of panels changes the look. More panels give more seams and a more even, rippling hem; fewer panels give broader, softer folds. The seam lines can also be a feature, outlined with piping or a contrast colour, or kept invisible.

Where the flare starts matters just as much. Flare from a high waistline, just under the bust, is graceful and kind to the stomach. Flare from the natural waist defines your shape more. Flare from the hip, with a closer top, gives a long, elegant line on tall figures. Tell us which you prefer, or send a photo and we will read it from that.

The hem and the length

A very full hem is partly cut on the bias, the diagonal of the fabric, which can stretch and drop a little as it hangs. Careful finishing keeps the hem even, and it is one reason a full abaya benefits from being made to your exact length. A custom length abaya that clears the floor in the shoes you will actually wear means the extra fabric swings rather than drags.

A full hem can also be finished with a narrow rolled edge for a light, floating look, or a deeper hem or facing that gives more weight and makes the folds hang more steadily. Our hemlines guide covers different hem finishes on a kameez.

Who a full flare suits

Flared and umbrella abayas suit women who enjoy movement and like a defined top with plenty of skirt. They balance broad shoulders, flatter a slim figure and look graceful on tall frames. On a petite frame, a flare from a higher waist and a slightly lower panel count keep the volume in proportion.

There are practical points. A full skirt takes more room in a car or on a crowded bus, needs care on escalators and stairs, and uses a lot of fabric, which makes it heavier. Many women keep a flared abaya for dressier days and choose a calmer cut for the daily routine; our article on everyday and dressy abaya cuts looks at that balance.

Ordering an umbrella abaya

Because an umbrella cut needs plenty of fabric, Fabric + Stitching is often the simpler route, as we supply what the design needs. With Stitching Only, we confirm the quantity required before you post your fabric to us. The quote form asks for your notes and photos; mention “umbrella” or “flared”, where the flare should start and the length you want.

Customers in Muscat can read the Muscat page; for Oman, the quote currency is agreed with you when you enquire. The quote includes delivery and any import charges, and production takes 5 to 7 working days once it is approved and paid in full.

Common questions

What is an umbrella abaya?

It is an abaya cut in many tapering panels so the hem forms a near-circle and the fabric falls in deep, even folds, like an open umbrella.

Is a flared abaya heavy?

It can be heavier than a straight cut because it uses much more fabric. Lighter fabrics and fewer panels keep the weight down.

Why does length matter more on a full abaya?

A wide hem that is too long drags and gathers dirt, while one that clears the floor in your usual shoes swings freely. Made to measure lets you set that length exactly.
