Chiffon and georgette abayas: sheer layers that work

Chiffon and georgette abayas look light and graceful but are sheer. How to wear them over an inner dress or lining, how they are stitched, and how to care for them.

Light, airy and see-through

Chiffon and georgette abayas float and move beautifully, but both fabrics are sheer, so they are almost always worn over something opaque: a matching inner dress, a slip, or a lining sewn into the abaya itself. Georgette has a slightly grainy, crinkled surface, more weight and more opacity; chiffon is finer, smoother and more transparent. Both are usually polyester today, though silk versions exist.

Our journal has a full comparison of georgette vs chiffon. This article looks at how to make either work as an abaya.

Three ways to wear a sheer abaya

  • Over a matching inner dress: the classic approach. A simple long dress in an opaque fabric of the same or a toning colour sits underneath, and the chiffon or georgette layer falls over it. An inner dress can be quoted together with the abaya.
  • With a sewn-in lining: the abaya is lined through the body, so it can be worn over everyday clothes. Sleeves are often left unlined to keep the airy look at the arms. See lined or unlined abaya.
  • As an open overlayer: worn open over a long dress or a top and wide trousers, more like a light coat or kimono. Our article on what to wear under an abaya has ideas.

Choosing the layer beneath

The layer underneath changes the colour you see. Black georgette over a black inner dress looks deep and solid; over a nude or beige slip it looks smoky and soft. If you want a contrast, such as a pale abaya over a darker dress, try holding the fabrics together in daylight first, because sheer cloth blends with whatever is behind it.

Fabric matters too. A cotton or viscose inner layer is cooler in heat, while a polyester lining is smooth and slides on easily but holds warmth. If static cling bothers you in dry, air-conditioned rooms, a natural-fibre layer helps.

How sheer abayas are stitched

With sheer fabric, every seam allowance shows from the outside, so neat finishing is part of the look. French seams, which enclose raw edges inside a narrow fold, are a common choice. Hems are usually finished with a fine rolled edge rather than a deep turn-up, which would show as a heavy band. Chiffon is slippery and shifts while being cut, so it takes patience to keep long panels straight.

Sheer fabrics also fray readily, which is one reason embroidery or lace on chiffon needs thought. If you want either, send a reference photo and we confirm what is possible on your fabric in the quote.

Heat, cold and care

A polyester chiffon abaya over a cotton inner dress can feel lighter than a single layer of heavy crepe, which makes the combination popular for warm evenings in places such as Manama. In colder climates, georgette works well as a dressier layer over a warm long-sleeved dress.

Wash sheer abayas by hand or on a gentle cycle in cool water, in a mesh bag, and never wring them. Hang to dry away from direct sun. Press with a cool iron or a steamer, because synthetic chiffon marks easily under heat. Our existing guide to washing lawn, chiffon and embroidered suits applies here too.

Ordering a chiffon or georgette abaya

On our custom abaya page you will see both routes. Tell us whether you want an inner dress, a lining or neither, and the colours of each layer. With Fabric + Stitching we propose fabrics for both layers and share photos and descriptions with your quote. With your own fabric, the Stitching Only route in Bahrain and elsewhere starts with photos; we confirm suitability and quantity before you post.

Choose Abaya on the quote form and mention “inner dress” or “lining” in your notes so both layers are quoted together.

Common questions

Do chiffon abayas need lining?

Usually yes, or they are worn over an opaque inner dress. Chiffon is transparent in a single layer, so most people want something underneath for coverage.

Is georgette or chiffon better for an abaya?

Georgette is a little heavier and more opaque, so it hangs better and shows less. Chiffon is lighter and more delicate. Both are usually worn with a lining or inner dress.

Can I order a matching inner dress with my abaya?

Yes. An inner dress, trousers or a scarf can be quoted together with the abaya, using one set of measurements.
