Which Western pieces go with a wardrobe of kurtas?

How to mix Western and Pakistani clothes: the Western pieces worth adding beside your kurtas, ranked by how many outfits each one unlocks, and the colours to pick.

The order to add them in

If your wardrobe is mostly kurtas, the Western pieces that earn their place are, in order: slim or straight trousers in a neutral colour, a plain shirt, a plain skirt, and one easy day dress. Trousers come first because they go under every kurta you own and with every Western top; the dress comes last because it is a complete outfit on its own and mixes least.

This is a planning list, not a styling guide. For the outfits themselves, our article on fusion outfits with kurtas, jeans, skirts and blazers shows the combinations.

1. Neutral slim or straight trousers

One pair of well-cut trousers in black, navy, stone or ivory turns every kurta into a new outfit and also pairs with shirts, T-shirts and knitwear. A slimmer leg such as cigarette pants suits short and knee-length kurtas; a straight leg works under longer kameez and looks smart with a shirt. If you only add one Western piece, make it this.

Jeans do a similar job for weekends. Dark, plain denim without heavy fading looks closest to tailored trousers and goes with the most kurtas.

2. A plain shirt

A collared shirt in white, pale blue or a soft neutral works with your new trousers and with a skirt, and it can be worn open as a light layer over a T-shirt. It also gives you a clean office look on days when a printed kurta feels too busy. A longer shirt that covers the hips is the most versatile; our guide to tunics and long shirts covers lengths.

3. A plain skirt

A short kurta or kurti over a long plain skirt is one of the easiest fusion looks, and the same skirt goes with the shirt and with knitwear in winter. A midi or maxi in a solid colour that appears in several of your kurta prints gives the most combinations. A flared or A-line shape suits short kurtas; a slimmer skirt suits a tucked shirt.

4. A day dress, and the extras

A simple dress is the piece for mornings when you do not want to think. It mixes least with kurtas, but it can still be worn with slim trousers underneath, or with a kurta-length cardigan over it. Our button-front shirt dress is one example: long, with a pointed collar, roll-up tab sleeves and side slits, which suits trousers worn underneath.

After those four, add whatever fills a gap in your week.

  • A blazer or tailored jacket, which formalises a kurta for meetings.
  • A long fine-knit cardigan, for layering over kurtas and dresses alike.
  • A denim jacket, for casual short kurtas and skirts.
  • Plain T-shirts, for wearing under open shirts or with skirts.

Choosing colours so everything mixes

Pick the colours of your Western pieces from your kurtas, not the other way round. Lay your most-worn kurtas side by side and note the two or three shades that keep appearing in the prints; those are your trouser, skirt and shirt colours. A tonal approach, explained in colours for modest outfits, keeps the mix calm.

We make Western pieces such as dresses, skirts, tops and trousers alongside kurtas. Send a photo of what you want through Fabric + Stitching or the design quote form, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.

Common questions

Can jeans replace trousers under a kurta?

For casual days, yes. Plain dark jeans work under short and knee-length kurtas. For work or more formal plans, tailored trousers look sharper.

Which kurta lengths go with a skirt?

Short kurtas and kurtis, ending around the hip or upper thigh, look balanced over a midi or maxi skirt. A knee-length kurta over a long skirt can look heavy unless both are in soft, light fabrics.

Do I need to change my kurtas to mix them with Western clothes?

No. Most kurtas mix well already. Adding a few neutral Western pieces that pick up colours from them is usually enough.
