What colour is mehndi green?
Mehndi green colour is the yellowish olive of fresh henna paste. How it compares with olive, khaki and army green, what pairs with it and how to ask for it.
InspirationThe green of henna paste
Mehndi green is the colour of henna paste when it is freshly mixed: a yellowish olive, green with plenty of yellow in it and a hint of brown. In English it is usually called henna green, olive yellow or a light moss green. It is not the orange-brown that henna leaves on skin; the name comes from the paste, not the stain.
It is a warm green. Where a bottle green or an emerald leans towards blue, mehndi leans firmly the other way, which is what gives it that earthy, sunlit look.
Mehndi as different sellers mean it
Like most shop colour names, mehndi stretches. All versions are warm, yellow-leaning greens, but the depth and brightness move a lot between sellers, between seasons and between fabrics. The same dye looks brighter on a silky surface and duller on a slubby khaddar.
- Bright mehndi: a lively yellow-green, almost chartreuse, often seen around festive seasons.
- Classic mehndi: a mid yellowish olive, the true henna-paste shade.
- Dusty mehndi: greyed and softened, close to a sage with yellow in it.
- Deep mehndi: darker and browner, drifting towards olive and moss.
Mehndi green vs olive, khaki and army green
These four are cousins, and listings often swap them. The differences come down to how much yellow, brown and grey each holds.
Olive is darker than mehndi and carries more brown, the colour of a green olive in a jar. Khaki is mostly a dull yellow-brown with only a little green, closer to sand or tan than to leaves. Army green is deeper and greyer again, a muted olive drab. Mehndi is the lightest and most yellow of the group.
A useful check: if the fabric looks more yellow than brown and lighter than an olive, it is mehndi. If brown wins, you are looking at olive or khaki. Pista and parrot green are relatives too, but pista is much paler and parrot much sharper.
Colours that go with mehndi green
Mehndi is a warm colour, so it sits happily beside other warm shades and gives a lively contrast against pinks. Some pairings for a kameez, dupatta or trousers:
- Mustard or turmeric yellow: the classic festive pairing, bright and joyful.
- Rani pink or hot pink: a strong contrast that has long been loved for celebrations.
- Orange or rust: warm on warm, earthy rather than loud.
- Maroon: richer and calmer, good for evenings.
- Cream, ivory or beige: the quiet option for daytime and work.
- Antique gold thread or trims: gold warms mehndi further; silver cools it down.
Asking for mehndi green when you order
Because the name covers so much, say which mehndi you mean. A clear request reads something like: “mehndi green, a mid yellowish olive like fresh henna paste, lighter than olive and not as bright as parrot green”. Add a daylight photo of a fabric or object in the shade you want, with a sheet of white paper in the frame. Our guide to describing a design in words has more help with briefs.
If the outfit is for a mehndi function, our mehndi guest outfit ideas cover fabric and comfort as well as colour. For a heavier winter mehndi green, the colour looks particularly rich on khaddar.
With Fabric + Stitching, the fabric and colour are agreed in your written quote before anything is cut. A small difference in shade between a screen and the cloth is normal and not a fault, so the more precisely you describe the shade, the closer the result. To start, request a quote.
Common questions
Is mehndi colour the same as henna colour?
It depends which henna you mean. Mehndi green is named after henna paste, which is a yellowish olive green. The orange to reddish-brown colour that henna leaves on skin is a different shade, and is not what shops mean by mehndi.
Can I wear mehndi green outside of mehndi functions?
Of course. In a dusty or deep version it works for the office and everyday wear, especially with cream, beige or rust. The bright versions are the ones most linked with festive events.
Does mehndi green go with black?
It can. Black trousers or a black dupatta make mehndi look sharper and more modern, though the pairing is stronger than mehndi with cream or gold. Try them side by side in daylight before deciding.
