What colours go with beige?

What colours go with beige? Deeper and brighter partners that stop it washing out, warm and cool beige, and how to plan trousers, dupatta and layers.

Beige’s partners at a glance

Beige goes with white, cream, brown, black and navy among the neutrals, and with olive, forest green, maroon, rust, terracotta, teal, mustard and dusty pink among the colours. It looks strongest beside something deeper or brighter than itself, because on its own it can fade into the skin and into the background.

That last point is what sets beige apart from other neutrals, and most of this article is about dealing with it. For the general method of dressing in close shades, see tonal dressing made simple.

Why beige washes out, and two fixes

Beige sits close to many skin tones in both depth and warmth. When the colour beside your face nearly matches your skin there is little contrast, and your features look flatter. Two fixes work.

  • Change the colour near the face. Keep the beige kurta or dress and add a dupatta, scarf, hijab or collar in a deeper or brighter shade. The beige becomes a calm background.
  • Change the beige. Choose one clearly lighter or darker than your skin, or one with a different undertone: a pinkish or greyish stone if your skin is golden, a golden sand if your skin is cool or deep.

Warm beige and cool beige

Not all beiges are the same colour. Hold yours against a sheet of white paper: if it leans yellow or golden it is warm, and if it leans grey or pink it is cool. Our guide to colours that suit you explains undertone without charts.

Warm beige (sand, camel, biscuit) pairs naturally with chocolate brown, rust, terracotta, olive, mustard and cream. Cool beige (stone, greige, mushroom) pairs naturally with navy, charcoal, maroon, dusty pink, teal and crisp white. Black works with both but is kinder to the cool ones; beside warm beige, dark brown often looks richer.

Planning trousers, dupatta and layers

Treat a beige kurta, kameez or dress as a blank page and decide where the depth will come from.

  • Trousers. White or cream for a light summer outfit; chocolate, black or navy to ground it; matching beige for a tonal set, provided the dupatta brings colour.
  • Dupatta or scarf. Colour pays off most here, because it sits by the face: maroon, forest green, teal or rust on plain beige, or a print that contains beige and one strong colour.
  • Layers. A navy blazer, an olive cardigan, a denim jacket or a brown waistcoat each turn the same beige piece into a different outfit.
  • Accessories. Tan leather and gold jewellery warm it; black and silver sharpen it.

Beige on beige

An all-beige outfit can look very polished, but only with variety. Mix at least two depths, such as cream with camel, and two textures, such as a slubby cotton with a smooth knit. Break it once with something dark: a belt, a bag, shoes or a hijab. Pale beige fabric is also more likely to be see-through, so check whether it needs lining.

Ordering beige pieces

On a screen, “beige” can mean anything from ivory to caramel. When you ask for a quote, send a daylight photo of the shade you mean, or of the pieces it has to go with. Our button-front shirt dress is offered in beige among its five colours, and the tiered maxi dress comes in taupe, a deeper relative. For other garments, Fabric + Stitching lets us supply an agreed fabric, and the written quote records the colour. Shades can look slightly different from photographs.

Common questions

Which colour dupatta goes with a beige suit?

A deeper or brighter one: maroon, forest green, teal, rust or navy on plain beige. If the suit is printed, pick the strongest colour in the print.

Can you wear beige with grey?

Yes, if the beige is a cool, stony one. Warm, yellowish beige beside cool grey can look mismatched, so put white or navy between them or choose a greige.

Is beige practical for work clothes?

It looks professional and pairs easily, but it shows marks more than dark colours and may need lining. Many people wear beige on the top half and a darker colour below.
