What is a front-open kameez? Open shirts explained
A front open kameez design opens down the centre front and is worn over an inner or slip with trousers. Where it fastens, and how it differs from a jacket.
InspirationA kameez that opens down the front
A front-open kameez, often called a front-open shirt, is a kameez with an opening that runs down the centre front from the neck to the hem. It fastens for part of the way, usually from the neck to the chest or waist, and falls open below that, so the trousers and whatever is worn underneath show through the gap as you move. It is the main garment of the outfit, with sleeves and its own shaping, and it takes the place of an ordinary kameez.
Shops use several names for versions of the same idea. Knowing them helps when you are searching for a reference photo.
- Front-open shirt: the general term. Straight or lightly flared, closed to the waist and open below.
- Gown style: long, often to the ankle or floor, with a flared skirt that opens over an inner dress or slip.
- Coat style: straighter and more structured, sometimes with a collar or lapels, and buttoned like a long coat.
What goes underneath
Because the front parts, the layer beneath is always on show. Sheer fabrics such as chiffon, organza and net need an inner whatever the style, and our guide to when a kameez needs lining explains the choice between a sewn-in lining and a separate slip. There are three usual answers.
- A matching slip or inner: a plain, sleeveless or strappy layer in the same colour. It disappears and simply keeps you covered.
- A contrast inner: a plain or printed inner chosen to be seen, which turns the opening into a panel of colour.
- Trousers only: when the kameez is closed to the hip and opens low, slim trousers may be all that shows.
Where it fastens
The fastening decides how the kameez behaves, so it pays to be exact about it. The two front edges are also on display the whole time, and they need a proper finish: a facing, piping, a border or lace. Our placket and button guide shows the common fastenings.
- Buttons and loops to the waist: the most secure, and from the chest up it looks much like a normal kameez.
- A single hook, tie or button at the chest: the front falls away from that point in an upside-down V. Dramatic, and it needs an inner that looks good.
- Hidden hooks: the edges meet without anything visible, which suits embroidered borders.
- No fastening: worn fully open like a long jacket. At that point the inner is doing the work of the kameez.
Not a jacket, an angrakha or a shirt dress
Three other garments open at the front, and each is built differently.
- Separate jacket or waistcoat: an extra layer worn over a complete kameez, which you can take off. A front-open kameez is not an extra. Remove it and you are left in a slip. Our article on waistcoats and jackets over a kameez covers that kind of layer.
- [Angrakha](/styles/cuts/angrakha): the front panels overlap and tie at the side. On a front-open kameez the edges meet at the centre and do not cross.
- Shirt dress: has a shirt collar and buttons the whole way down, and is worn closed.
Asking for one
This is a style to show us, since it is not one of the choices on the quote form. Send a photo and tell us four things: where the front should stop being fastened, what kind of fastening you want, the length, and what you plan to wear underneath. If you want a matching inner made as well, list it as a separate piece.
Slim trousers such as cigarette pants or straight trousers are the usual partner, because the open front already draws attention to the leg. You can share the design through Send Your Design and start a quote. We confirm in the written quote what is possible on your fabric and design, and nothing is cut before you approve it.
Common questions
What do you wear under a front-open kameez?
A slip or inner in a matching or contrast colour, with trousers. The inner can be sleeveless because the kameez provides the sleeves. With sheer fabrics the inner is essential.
Is a front-open kameez the same as a jacket-style suit?
Not exactly. A jacket-style suit usually means a separate jacket over a full kameez or inner dress, sold as two pieces. A front-open kameez is one garment that opens at the front. Brands blur the terms, so go by the photo.
Can a front-open kameez be worn fully closed?
Only if it is made with fastenings to the hem or to a low point. Most are designed to fall open from the waist or chest. If you want the option of wearing it closed, ask for buttons or hooks further down when you order.
