What is a shameez? Slip vs sewn-in lining for a kameez
What is a shameez? A separate inner slip worn under a sheer kameez. How it compares with a sewn-in lining for washing, heat and wearing under several outfits.
InspirationA slip, not a lining
A shameez, also spelled shamiz or shamees, is a separate inner slip worn under a kameez that would otherwise show through. It is a plain, usually sleeveless garment in a thin, smooth fabric, cut a little narrower and shorter than the kameez so that it stays out of sight. The word is thought to come from “chemise”.
A sewn-in lining does the same job from inside the garment: a second layer cut to the same shape and stitched into the kameez at the neck, armholes or seams. Both make sheer fabric wearable. They differ in almost everything else, which is why the choice deserves a minute’s thought. Whether your fabric needs either is a separate question, answered in our guide to when a kameez needs lining.
How the two compare day to day
- Washing: a slip goes in the wash on its own, on whatever setting suits it, and a single-layer kameez dries fast. A lined kameez is two fabrics joined together, so it dries more slowly and both layers have to tolerate the same wash.
- Heat: either way you are wearing two layers. A loose slip in fine cotton lets air move between them; a lining sits flush against the outer fabric. In real heat the fabric matters more than the method, as our guide to lining for hot and cold climates explains.
- Several outfits: one slip in a neutral shade can serve every pale kameez you own. A lining serves one garment only.
- Staying put: a lining cannot ride up, twist or peep out at the side slits. A slip can do all three if its length and width are not planned against the kameez.
- Embroidery: a lining covers the rough back of embroidery so that it never touches the skin. A slip protects you only where it reaches.
- The look: lined fabric hangs as one slightly heavier cloth. Over a slip, a fine lawn or chiffon keeps more of its own movement.
When each is the better answer
A shameez suits people who own several sheer or pale suits, who wash their clothes often, or who like to decide on the day how covered a fabric looks. It is also kinder to delicate outer fabrics, because the layer next to the skin can be washed thoroughly while the kameez is washed gently.
A lining suits a kameez that is worn as a single finished piece: formal chiffon, organza and net, scratchy embroidery, and anything with a neckline or armhole that a ready-made slip would not match.
Getting a shameez right
A slip that shows is worse than none. Check four things.
- Neckline: if it sits lower than the kameez neck, a band of sheer fabric lies over bare skin; if higher, it shows. It should follow the kameez neckline closely.
- Length and slits: a little shorter than the kameez, with side slits to the same height so that it does not flash at the hip.
- Colour: a shade close to your skin disappears under most pale fabrics. White under white makes the cloth look brighter but can outline the edges of the slip.
- Fabric: fine cotton or lawn for breathability; a smoother lining fabric where chiffon needs to glide.
Asking for one with your outfit
Lining is one of the choices on our quote form, and “advise me” is there if you are unsure. If you would rather have a separate slip made to go with a kameez, say so in the notes when you ask for a quote, and we confirm in writing what is possible for your fabric and design. The custom stitching page explains how the measurements and design are agreed before anything is cut.
Common questions
Is a shameez the same as a camisole?
They overlap. A camisole is short and ends at the waist or hip. A shameez is longer, usually reaching towards the hem of the kameez, so the whole length of a sheer fabric is backed, not only the bodice.
Does a shameez have sleeves?
Normally not. It is sleeveless or has shoulder straps, which is why the sleeves of a sheer kameez stay sheer over a slip. If you want the arms covered too, the sleeves need their own lining.
Can I wear one shameez under different colours?
Under pale and mid shades, yes, if the slip is close to your skin tone. Under a strong or dark sheer fabric, a slip in a similar colour usually looks better, because a pale one can dull the shade.
