What is shimmer fabric? Metallic finishes explained

What is shimmer fabric? Cloth that glitters all over through metallic yarn or a foil finish, how it differs from tissue and embroidery, and how it feels and wears.

Shimmer means sparkle all over

Shimmer fabric is any cloth that glitters across its whole surface rather than in chosen motifs. The sparkle comes either from metallic yarn woven or knitted into the cloth, or from a foil, glitter or metallic coating applied to the surface afterwards. Shimmer georgette, shimmer chiffon and shimmer net are common market names, and lamé is the classic term for a fabric made with metallic threads.

Because the word describes an effect rather than a fibre, two shimmer fabrics can feel and wear very differently. The first question is always how the sparkle got there.

Metallic yarn or a surface finish?

Turn the fabric over. Sparkle that shows on the back points to a metallic yarn; a plain back with a sparkly face points to a finish.

  • Metallic yarn: a thin metallised film or flat ribbon, sometimes wrapped around a core thread, is woven or knitted in alongside ordinary yarns. The sparkle is part of the structure. These yarns are often called lurex, after a trade name.
  • Lamé: a fabric in which metallic threads dominate, giving a strong gold, silver or bronze look.
  • Foil finish: a thin metallic layer bonded to the face, all over or in a pattern. It can crack or rub off with friction, heat and washing.
  • Glitter or coated finishes: tiny particles fixed with a binder, very sparkly at first but prone to shedding.

Shimmer, tissue and embroidery

Tissue is one particular kind of shimmer fabric: a sheer, crisp cloth with metallic yarn running through it, often used for dupattas and formal kameez. Shimmer is the broader word and covers soft, drapey fabrics such as georgette as well as crisp ones.

Embroidery is a different approach. Metallic thread, sequins or gota add sparkle in chosen places, such as a neckline or hem, and leave the rest of the cloth plain. Shimmer fabric glitters everywhere, so it suits clean cuts with little extra decoration. Our guide to sequins and beadwork covers the embellished route.

How it feels, creases and wears

Shimmer is lovely for a party or an Eid evening, but it has habits worth knowing before you choose it. Always check the care label and test on a hidden area first.

  • Scratch: metallic yarns can feel rough, especially at seams, necklines and underarms. A soft lining helps a great deal; our article on embroidery, lining and scratch explains the same issue for embellished outfits.
  • Creasing: metallic yarns can hold sharp creases and resist pressing. Fold loosely or roll, and hang the garment soon after unpacking.
  • Heat: a hot iron can melt or dull metallic film and foil. Press on the reverse at a low setting with a cloth between iron and fabric.
  • Friction: underarms, inner sleeves and the seat lose foil and glitter fastest.
  • Washing: many shimmer fabrics are hand wash or dry clean only.

Ordering a shimmer outfit

Shimmer looks most considered in simple shapes: a straight kameez, a slip-style dress, or wide trousers with a plain top. Pair it with matt pieces so it does not overwhelm, and consider lining the whole garment if the yarn is scratchy. For festive ideas, see our Eid page.

Common questions

Does shimmer fabric lose its sparkle?

Metallic yarns keep their look reasonably well with gentle care. Foil and glitter finishes are the ones that dull or rub away over time, especially where the fabric rubs against itself.

Is shimmer fabric hot to wear?

Often, because most shimmer fabrics are synthetic and metallic yarns absorb no moisture. A breathable lining and a looser cut make it more comfortable.
