What to wear for a family visit: modest and comfortable

What to wear for a family visit: modest, comfortable outfits for sitting on the floor, helping in the kitchen, playing with little ones and meeting relatives.

Dressed up enough, relaxed enough

For a family visit, the most practical outfit is a neat, modest shalwar kameez or a long tunic with trousers: smart enough to greet older relatives, loose enough to sit on the floor, and washable enough to survive helping in the kitchen. A dupatta or scarf you can adjust easily, a mid-length kameez with low slits and a comfortable waistband cover most situations. Whether it is your in-laws, grandparents or a houseful of cousins, the same principles apply.

Visits are personal, and every family has its own expectations, so take your cue from the household. This guide is about the practical side: what to wear so you can join in without worrying about your clothes.

A visit is mostly sitting, serving and playing

Think through what the day will actually involve. Most family visits include some of these:

  • Sitting on a floor cushion or low sofa: a kameez with enough ease at the seat and slits that do not open to the hip.
  • Bending to greet elders or pick up a toddler: a high enough neckline at front and back, and a dupatta that stays put.
  • Helping in the kitchen: sleeves that push up, and fabric that will not mind a splash.
  • Long meals and late evenings: a soft waist, and a layer for when the heating is off or the fan is on.

Outfits that work

For a first visit or a formal one, a plain or lightly embroidered three-piece in a calm colour is the safe choice. Choose a classic shalwar or straight trousers, a kameez to the knee or just below, and a dupatta large enough to cover the head if that is the custom in the household. Our guide to dupatta sizes and styles helps you choose.

For relaxed visits and long stays, a printed cotton kameez with wide trousers is comfortable from morning to night. Pack one dressier outfit in case relatives drop in or there is a dinner; our article on dawat and dinner-party outfits has ideas.

Visiting in cold weather

Homes can be cold, especially older houses or families who keep the heating low. A kameez in karandi or khaddar is warm and opaque without bulky layers, and a shawl doubles as a dupatta. Ask for full sleeves with enough room for a fine thermal layer underneath, and lined trousers if you feel the cold.

In hot countries, the opposite applies: fine lawn with a half lining, wide trousers, and a light cotton dupatta. Many families keep fans or air conditioning running, so a light shawl is still worth packing.

Travelling to see family

If the visit involves a flight, plan the outfit for arrival: relatives often meet you at the door, tired or not. A crease-hiding print and a dupatta you can straighten in the car look fresh after a long journey. Families travel in every direction, from Bradford to the Gulf and back; whatever your route, keep one clean outfit in your hand luggage.

Gifts of clothing are common on family visits too. If someone has given you an unstitched suit, our unstitched suit stitching service can turn it into something you will wear on the next visit.

Having outfits made before the trip

If you have fabric waiting to be stitched, send its details through the Stitching Only quote form with your measurements and a note that the outfits are for a family visit. We confirm the fabric and how to send it before you post anything, and production takes 5 to 7 working days from your fabric reaching us and the quote being paid. Customers in Salmiya and throughout Kuwait choose dollars, euros or pounds for the quote, which includes delivery and any import charges.

Common questions

What should I wear to meet my in-laws?

A neat, modest three-piece or a long kameez with trousers in a calm colour, with a dupatta you can adjust easily. Take your cue from the household on how formal to be, and choose something you can sit and move in comfortably.

What is comfortable for sitting on the floor in a kameez?

A kameez with a little extra ease at the seat, slits that are not too high, and a shalwar or wide trousers with an elastic or drawstring waist. Slim trousers and fitted kameez pull when you sit cross-legged.

Should I bring a dressier outfit on a family visit?

It is worth packing one. Relatives often call round or arrange a dinner, and a lightly embroidered suit means you are ready without needing to shop.
