What to wear to a majlis in Muharram
What to wear to a majlis: the usual custom is a plain black or dark suit with a head covering, in breathable fabric cut loose for crowded rooms and floor seating.
InspirationPlain, dark and comfortable
The usual custom at a majlis in Muharram is a plain black or very dark shalwar kameez, or an abaya, with a dupatta or scarf to cover your head, and no embroidery, shine or bright colour. Practically, the outfit also needs to stay comfortable in a warm, crowded room where everyone sits on the floor for a long time.
Customs differ between families and communities, and this article covers clothing only. If you are a guest and unsure, ask the host or a family member what is usual at their gathering.
What people usually wear
Majalis are mourning gatherings, and the clothing reflects that. As a general picture:
- Colour: black is the most common. Some women wear very dark navy, grey or brown instead.
- Detail: plain fabric, without embroidery, sequins, lace or metallic thread.
- Jewellery and make-up: kept minimal or left off entirely.
- Covering: long sleeves, a loose kameez that covers the hips, and a head covering.
Comfort for crowded rooms and floor seating
Halls and homes fill up, and the air grows warm. A breathable black cotton, lawn or cambric is far more comfortable than polyester. Black lawn can be thin, so ask for a lining or choose a denser cotton; our guide to non see-through fabrics explains how to test.
For floor seating, a kameez with a little extra ease at the hips and side slits lets you sit cross-legged without pulling. A shalwar or loose straight trouser is more comfortable than a churidar. Our article on comfortable outfits for long gatherings has more on sitting for hours.
The dupatta or abaya
A large black dupatta in cotton or georgette stays on the head better than chiffon, and covers the shoulders well. Some women prefer an abaya with a scarf over everyday clothes, which is quick to put on when attending several gatherings in one day. Our custom abaya page explains how we make abayas to measure.
Having a plain black suit made
Because majalis are often attended over several days, many women keep two or three plain black suits. In your quote request, choose “none” for embroidery and give the fabric, lining, sleeve length and kameez length. Black dyes vary from jet to a softer off-black, so send a photo if the shade matters. We confirm the details in the written quote, and our Fabric + Stitching service supplies the fabric.
Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping time is added, so order well ahead. Black fades with washing; wash inside out and dry in the shade, as our guide to drying without fading explains.
Common questions
Can a black suit have a little tone-on-tone embroidery?
Some women wear black suits with subtle black thread work, while others keep to completely plain fabric for a majlis. If you are unsure, plain is the safer choice.
What should a guest from another background wear?
Dark, plain and modest clothes with long sleeves, and a scarf to cover your head. Follow what the host and other women do.
Is an abaya suitable for a majlis?
Yes. A plain black abaya with a scarf is widely worn and is practical when you are going between several gatherings.
