A hosted wedding anniversary party, such as a silver jubilee in a hall or a big family home, calls for formal or semi-formal clothes with moderate embellishment, about the level of an engagement party. Guests wear a good suit or a smart dress; the wife being celebrated can dress up a level further, often in a colour linked to the anniversary or to her own wedding.
A quiet anniversary dinner for two or a meal at a restaurant is a different thing. For that, smart dinner wear is plenty.
Why it is closer to an engagement party
Big anniversary parties often borrow the shape of a wedding function: a decorated seat or stage for the couple, a cake cutting, speeches from children, family photographs and sometimes music and dancing. Relatives travel for them and dress for the photographs. Turning up in office wear would feel underdressed, while full wedding-guest formality can be too much unless the invitation hints at it.

If the party is for you
This is a chance to wear something rich without recreating your wedding outfit. Many women choose a colour from their wedding photographs in a more wearable form, or a shade tied to the anniversary. A three-piece suit or a long frock with detailed or statement embroidery looks celebratory, and a lighter dupatta keeps it comfortable through hours of greeting people.

Colours tied to the anniversary

- Pearl (30 years): ivory, pearl grey and soft blush.
- Ruby (40 years): ruby, wine and deep rose.

For daughters, family and guests
Daughters and daughters-in-law who are hosting often coordinate with each other, in one palette rather than identical outfits, so they stand out in family photos without competing with the couple. Other guests can wear any festive colour that does not imitate the anniversary theme too closely, unless the hosts have asked everyone to join in.
Expect a long evening with plenty of standing, so choose a comfortable trouser, a dupatta you can pin and shoes you can greet a hundred people in.

Common questions
Can guests wear silver to a silver jubilee?
Usually yes, unless the hosts have asked guests to leave silver to the couple. A touch of silver in embroidery or a dupatta is a nice nod; head-to-toe silver can look like you are matching the guests of honour.
Should the couple match each other?
