Why do fine stripes and checks shimmer on camera?

Why do stripes look weird on camera? Fine stripes, tiny checks and close weaves clash with the camera’s pixel grid and ripple. Which scales are safe to wear on film.

The moiré effect, in plain words

Fine stripes and small checks shimmer on camera because of the moiré effect: the regular lines in the fabric are close in size to the regular grid of tiny light sensors in the camera, and the two patterns interfere. The result is wavy bands, rainbow fringes or a crawling flicker that is not in the cloth at all. You see it on phones, laptops, video calls and recorded event films, and it often changes or vanishes as the person moves.

Think of laying one fine net curtain over another. Where the threads line up and fall out of step, big soft waves appear. A camera does the same thing with a pinstripe, and the screen you watch on can add a second round of it.

Which patterns cause it

Anything with small, even, high-contrast repeats is a candidate. The usual culprits are:

  • Narrow pinstripes and pencil stripes, especially black and white.
  • Tiny gingham, mini checks and houndstooth.
  • Fine herringbone and twill lines in suiting fabrics.
  • Close, regular weaves with a slight sheen, such as some shirting cottons and fine jacquards.
  • Very fine pleats or pintucks that form neat parallel lines.

Scales that usually stay steady

Distance changes everything. The same striped kurta can ripple in a full-length shot and look fine in a close-up, because the stripe’s size relative to the sensor grid has changed. As a rough guide, broad stripes about the width of a finger or more, and checks you can easily count from across a room, rarely cause trouble. Patterns that blur into a single colour when you squint at them from a few steps away are the ones that tend to shimmer.

Irregular patterns are safe at any scale, because there is no even grid to clash with. Florals, paisleys, block prints with natural variation and textured cloths with an uneven surface, such as the slubs described in dobby, slub and textured cottons, behave well on camera.

Choosing an outfit that will be filmed

For a wedding film, an online interview or a family video call, a few choices make life easier:

  • Solid colours with texture or embroidery, as in plain suits with presence, look rich and stay still.
  • Medium to large prints, florals and broad stripes are safe; save the pinstripe for days off camera.
  • Very bright white and fluorescent shades can glare on video, and pure black can lose its detail; mid to deep colours hold up well.
  • If you are not sure, turn on your phone camera or a video call preview and move around in front of it. If you can see waves, so can everyone else.

Planning an outfit for the screen

For an online interview, the ideas in modest job interview outfits pair well with these camera tips. Common questions

Can I wear stripes on a video call?

Yes, if they are fairly broad. Fine pinstripes and very small checks are the ones that ripple. Check yourself in the camera preview before the call and move a little to see whether any waves appear.

Why does the shimmer change when I move?

Because moving changes the size and angle of the pattern on the camera sensor. At some distances and angles the stripes line up with the sensor grid and ripple, at others they do not.

Does embroidery cause moiré?

Rarely. Hand and machine embroidery have small variations that break up any regular grid. Very fine, evenly spaced lines of satin stitch can occasionally shimmer, but it is much less common than with woven stripes.
