What to wear to your baby’s aqiqah as the mother

An aqiqah outfit for the mother a few weeks after the birth: a forgiving fit, discreet feeding access and embroidery kept away from where the baby rests.

The short answer

Wear something festive but soft: a relaxed kameez or kurta set with an adjustable waist, a hidden opening for feeding, embroidery on the sleeves, hem or back rather than across the front, and a dupatta big enough to cover you. You will be holding the baby and greeting guests for hours, so comfort comes first and the outfit should look special without asking anything of you.

If you are attending someone else’s aqiqah, our article on baby shower and aqiqah guest outfits is written for guests.

Why the mother’s outfit is different

An aqiqah is often held within the first few weeks after a birth, when your shape is still changing from week to week and you may be feeding often. A fitted formal suit made to your pre-pregnancy measurements is unlikely to be comfortable, and anything that needs to come off to feed the baby will be a nuisance in a room full of relatives.

You are also the person everyone wants a photo with, usually holding the baby against your shoulder or chest. That is exactly where a heavy, scratchy embroidered front sits.

A fit that forgives

Choose a cut that does not depend on one exact measurement at the waist or hips. Useful features to ask for:

  • A straight or A-line kameez with gentle ease, rather than a shaped, darted fit. Our guide to maternity and adjustable fits explains several options.
  • Side ties or a drawstring back that let the kameez be tightened or loosened by a few centimetres.
  • A drawstring or soft elastic waist on the shalwar or trousers, with nothing pressing on the stomach.
  • Calf length rather than floor length, so you are not stepping on your hem while carrying the baby.

Feeding access and embroidery placement

A discreet opening means you can feed without leaving the room or changing. Concealed zips under a yoke, a wrap front or a lift-up two-piece all work, and we explain each in our article on nursing-friendly formal outfits.

Keep the front and shoulders soft, with delicate thread work at most, and let the sleeves, hem and dupatta carry the colour and detail. Soft fabrics such as lawn, cambric or cotton-silk are kinder against a baby’s skin than stiff organza or metallic thread, and a print hides the small marks of a day spent holding a newborn.

Timing the order

Making takes 5 to 7 working days once the quote is approved and paid in full, and shipping time comes on top. Some mothers order in the last weeks of pregnancy with a deliberately relaxed cut and adjustable ties; others measure soon after the birth and order then. Either way, tell us what the outfit is for and which features you need when you ask for a quote. With Fabric + Stitching we suggest a soft fabric for you, and we confirm what is possible on your design in the written quote.

Common questions

What colours are usual for an aqiqah?

There is no fixed colour. Soft pastels, white with coloured embroidery and gentle prints are common, but families choose whatever feels festive to them.

Should I order a three-piece or a two-piece?

A three-piece gives you a dupatta for covering while feeding, which many mothers find useful. A two-piece with a separate large shawl works just as well.

Can I wear an abaya instead?

Yes. A soft abaya with a front opening over a simple inner dress is comfortable, easy to feed in and quick to put on.
