Bra-strap keepers: a small detail for wide necklines
A bra strap keeper in a dress or kameez is a small press-stud loop inside the shoulder seam that keeps the strap hidden. Which necklines need one and how to ask.
InspirationWhat a strap keeper is
A bra-strap keeper, also called a lingerie strap holder, is a small loop sewn inside the shoulder seam of a garment. It is usually a short length of narrow tape with a tiny press stud at the free end. You pass it under your bra strap and snap it closed, and the strap is held under the shoulder of the kameez or dress instead of sliding out into view.
It costs almost nothing in fabric, is invisible from outside and solves one of the most common small irritations of a wide neckline.
How it is made and placed
One end of the tape is stitched into the shoulder seam allowance, on the inside; the other end carries one half of a small press stud, the kind tailors call a tich button, with the other half sewn to the seam beside it. Some keepers use a thread chain and a tiny button instead. The position along the shoulder is what makes it work: it has to sit where your strap naturally falls.
Necklines that benefit
The wider the neckline and the narrower the shoulder of the garment, the more a keeper helps. These are the main cases:
- [Boat neck](/styles/necklines/boat-neck): the neckline runs close to the shoulder point, so straps slip into view as soon as you move your arms.
- Wide [square neck](/styles/necklines/square-neck) and wide sweetheart shapes, for the same reason.
- [Sleeveless](/styles/sleeves/sleeveless) and cut-in armholes, where the shoulder strip of the garment is narrow.
- Sheer fabrics such as chiffon, where a strap that slides sideways shows through.
- Outfits with a heavy dupatta pinned at one shoulder, which can drag the neckline sideways.
When a keeper cannot help
A keeper only holds the strap under the garment if the strap sits within the width of the shoulder. If your strap naturally falls further out than the edge of the neckline, nothing can hide it; the answer then is a slightly narrower neckline, or a bra with straps set closer to the neck. A high round neck rarely needs a keeper at all, since the shoulder is wide enough to cover the strap anyway. Our dupatta styling guide has other ways to soften a wide neckline.
How to ask for strap keepers
Wear the bra you will wear with the outfit, and measure along the top of your shoulder from the side of your neck to the middle of your strap. Give that measurement with a note such as “bra-strap keepers at both shoulders, strap 7 cm from the neck”. The measuring help page shows where the side of the neck point is. Small details like this are written into your quote with the rest of the design, as the custom stitching page explains, so add it to your notes when you request a quote.
Common questions
Can strap keepers be seen from the outside?
No. They are sewn into the inside of the shoulder seam, so at most a tiny stitch might show on a very fine fabric.
Do strap keepers work with a racerback or sports bra?
Racerback straps sit close to the neck, so keepers need to be placed further in than usual. Measure where your straps actually sit.
Can strap keepers be added to a kameez I already own?
We do not alter existing clothes. They can be included in a new outfit made to your measurements.
