Can a tailor find the exact fabric in your photo?

Want to find the same fabric as in a picture? An identical cloth or print is rarely possible. Why that is, what can be matched, and how a nearest match is agreed.

Rarely the exact one

Usually not the identical cloth. A tailor can often find a fabric of the same type in a similar colour, but the exact print or weave in someone else’s photo is seldom available, because prints tend to belong to one brand and one season, and a photo hides much of what makes a fabric what it is. What can be agreed is a nearest match, and it should be shown to you before anything is cut.

Why an identical match is so hard

Several separate things stand in the way, and any one of them is enough.

  • Prints are often exclusive. Many printed and embroidered designs are produced for one label’s collection and never sold as cloth by the metre.
  • Runs sell out. A fabric is woven or printed in a batch. When it is gone, a later batch may differ, or there may never be one.
  • Dye lots vary. Even the same cloth from a later batch can be a shade lighter or warmer.
  • A photo cannot show weight. Lawn, cambric and voile can look identical in a picture and feel quite different in the hand.
  • A photo cannot show sheen or texture honestly. Lighting, filters and editing change both, and so does your screen.
  • The fabric name may be a guess. Captions online often give a market name loosely, so even the label in the post may not be reliable.

What can be matched

Break the photo down into qualities and decide which you care about most. A tailor can usually get close on several of them at once, but rarely on all, so a ranking helps more than “the same as this”.

  • Fabric type: a crisp cotton, a soft drape, a sheer overlay. Our fabric guides describe the common ones.
  • Colour family: the shade, how bright or muted it is, and whether it leans warm or cool.
  • Print style: small florals, a large motif, a geometric repeat, or plain.
  • Weight and season: something airy for heat or something with body for cooler days.
  • Finish: matte, a soft sheen or a high shine.

How a nearest match is agreed

The honest way is simple: you are shown the proposed fabric before cutting, and you decide. With our Fabric + Stitching service, we send photos and descriptions of the fabric we propose with your quote, and nothing is cut until you agree it. We do not make claims about holding any particular cloth, and we do not offer free samples, so judge the photos with care. Our page on choosing fabric explains how the fabric is agreed.

Tell us what matters most when you ask for a Fabric + Stitching quote. “The colour matters more than the print” or “it must be a soft cotton, the pattern can change” gives a far better result than a photo alone.

If you already own a suit piece in the very fabric you love, the question disappears. You can send it to be made up with Stitching Only, once we have confirmed it is suitable.

Common questions

Can a print from a brand’s catalogue be copied onto new fabric?

That would mean reproducing someone else’s design, which is not the same as choosing a similar fabric. Look instead for a cloth with a print in the same spirit: the same scale, colours and type of motif.

Why does the fabric look different on my phone and on my laptop?

Screens show colour differently, and photos are affected by light and camera settings. A small difference in shade between a photo and the cloth is normal, so judge colour from more than one picture where you can.

What if no close match can be found?

Then you can widen the brief, for example by keeping the colour and changing the print, or choose a different fabric altogether. Nothing goes ahead until you have agreed the fabric in writing.
