Can you wear a kurta as a dress?

Can you wear a kurta as a dress? Yes, if the length, side slits, lining and hem width pass four checks. What to change when ordering one to wear both ways.

Yes, if it passes four checks

Yes, you can wear a kurta as a dress, provided it is long enough, the side slits do not open above the knee, the fabric is not see-through and the hem is wide enough to walk in. A long kurta that passes those four checks is, in practice, a shift or A-line dress.

Most kurtas and kameez are designed as one half of an outfit, with trousers doing part of the covering. The checks are about what happens when the trousers come off.

The four checks

Length. For most people knee length is the minimum for wearing alone, and mid-calf is more comfortable. Remember that the hem rises when you sit, climb stairs or lift your arms.

Slit height. The traditional side slit, the chaak, often runs from the hem up to the hip. Over trousers that is practical; without them it shows the whole leg. For wearing alone, slits should start no higher than the knee, or be closed.

Opacity. Lawn and other fine cottons that seem solid indoors can be see-through against sunlight, and trousers normally hide that from the hip down. Hold the kurta up to a window. If you can see your hand through it, it needs a lining or a slip. See does my kameez need lining.

Hem width. A straight kurta relies on its slits for walking room. Close the slits and a narrow hem will hobble you, so a kurta worn as a dress needs either an A-line cut or short slits low down.

Making a kurta you already own work

If a kurta in your wardrobe fails a check, layering can cover the gap. We do not alter existing garments, so these are things to do yourself with what you have.

  • Slits too high: wear slim trousers, leggings or opaque tights in a matching or neutral colour.
  • Too sheer: add a full slip in a matching or skin-tone shade.
  • Slightly short: opaque tights and boots in cool weather.
  • Shapeless alone: a belt at the waist, or a long cardigan or jacket over the top.

What to change when ordering one to wear both ways

If you are having a kurta made and want it to double as a dress, say so at the start. The changes are small.

  • A longer hem, below the knee or to mid-calf, measured from the shoulder.
  • Closed sides or low slits, opening only from the knee down.
  • A gentle A-line, so there is walking room without high slits.
  • Lining in the body and skirt, if the fabric is fine or pale.
  • Side-seam pockets, which a dress benefits from more than a kurta worn with trousers.
  • A neckline and sleeve you would wear without a dupatta, since a dress usually goes without one.

Asking for it in your quote

With those changes, the same garment works over trousers as a long kameez and alone as a dress. Kameez length and lining are standard choices on our quote form, and you can describe the slits and pockets in your notes. Send your design or photo; the custom stitching page explains how to order with your fabric or ours, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric in the written quote.

Kurta, kameez, tunic or dress?

The names overlap. A kameez is the tunic of a shalwar kameez, a kurta is a similar tunic that is often straighter and worn more casually, and tunic is the general English word. What separates all three from a dress is mainly the side slit and the assumption of trousers. Take those away and the difference is one of name. Our article on long tunics and shirts covers thigh-length pieces meant for trousers, and made-to-measure Western dresses covers dress shapes.

Common questions

How long should a kurta be to wear it as a dress?

At least to the knee, and ideally below it. Check the length seated and with your arms raised, because the hem lifts with both.

Can I wear a kurta as a dress with a hijab?

Yes. Choose a mid-calf or longer length with closed sides, full sleeves and a lined or opaque fabric, and add trousers or tights underneath if you prefer more cover.

What shoes go with a kurta worn as a dress?

The same as with any day dress: flat sandals or trainers in summer, loafers or ankle boots in cooler months. Khussas and other flat traditional shoes work as well.
