Which colours look good on dark skin tones?
Which colours suit dark skin? Any colour can. White, bright and jewel shades and warm metallics often glow against deep skin, and contrast changes the effect.
InspirationNo colour is off limits
Every colour can be worn with dark skin. Shades that many people find glow against deep skin include crisp white, bright colours such as cobalt and fuchsia, jewel tones such as emerald and ruby, and warm metallics such as gold and copper. These are good places to start, not a list to stay inside.
Advice about dark skin often focuses on what to avoid. That is not useful here. The more helpful idea is contrast: how far a colour is from your skin in lightness, and what effect that difference has.
How contrast changes the effect
A colour much lighter or brighter than your skin creates high contrast, a clear frame around the face. White, pastels, brights and metallics do this, which is why they are often described as glowing on deep skin. A colour close to your own depth, such as chocolate, espresso, aubergine or deep olive, creates low contrast, which looks tonal, calm and quietly elegant.
Both are good effects. They are simply different, and you can choose between them by occasion and mood. If you want the outfit to feel striking, go for contrast; if you want it to feel rich and understated, go tonal.
Shades to try
Hold each one under your chin in daylight and notice how it looks on you. These are popular starting points across a range of deep complexions:
- White and ivory: among the strongest contrasts, crisp in summer cottons.
- Cobalt and royal blue: clear and vivid.
- Fuchsia and rani pink: bold, festive and confident.
- Emerald, ruby and amethyst: the jewel tones, rich in evening fabrics.
- Saffron, marigold and mustard: warm yellows that many find especially striking.
- Orange and coral: lively for daytime and summer.
- Lilac, mint and other pastels: pale colours give high contrast too, and look fresh rather than washed out on many deep complexions.
- Chocolate, plum and deep olive: the tonal option, smart for work and evenings.
Metallics and embellishment
Warm metallics such as gold, copper and bronze echo the warmth in many deep skin tones, while silver gives a brighter, cooler contrast. Metallic or light-coloured thread on a deep fabric works the same way: a neckline in gold-toned or ivory thread puts a highlight right where it frames the face. Embroidery is something to ask for in your quote, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design; see custom embroidery for the levels.
Testing and ordering
Photograph yourself in two or three candidate colours, once in daylight and once under evening light, since some shades change a lot indoors. Our rule-free colour guide has more on testing, and if you wear a hijab, our guide to choosing a hijab colour near your face applies the same ideas to the shade that frames it.
When you have chosen, describe the shade with a photo and start a custom quote. The fabric and colour are agreed in your written quote before anything is cut.
Common questions
Can dark skin wear pastels?
Yes. Pastels are much lighter than deep skin, so they create a clear contrast and often look fresh and bright. Try a few in daylight to find the ones you like most.
Is black too dark to wear with dark skin?
No. Black on deep skin is a low-contrast, tonal look that many find elegant. If you want more lift, add a light or metallic detail at the neckline or in the dupatta.
What does dusky mean as a skin tone?
Dusky is a South Asian English word for a deeper brown complexion. Like wheatish, it describes depth rather than anything about which colours a person can wear.
