Which colours suit henna-red hair?

What colours suit red hair from henna, burgundy dye or auburn? Greens, teals, navy, cream and browns tend to sit well beside it; some reds and pinks compete.

A starting point, not a rule

With henna-red, burgundy or auburn hair, greens, teals, navy, cream and warm browns usually sit comfortably beside it, while bright reds, oranges and some pinks can compete with it. That is a general colour idea, not a verdict on anyone: your own eye, and how you feel in a colour, matter more than any list.

The reason is simple. Hair close to the face is a large block of colour, and the clothes nearest it, especially the dupatta, are read together with it. Colours that contrast with red give it room; colours that are almost but not quite the same red can look like a near miss.

Which red do you have?

Red hair from a bottle or a bowl is not one colour, and it helps to know which way yours leans:

  • Henna gives an orange-red to copper on light or grey hair, and a reddish-brown glint on dark hair. It is a warm red.
  • Burgundy dye is a red with a violet lean, closer to wine. It is a cooler red.
  • Auburn is a red-brown, sitting between the two, often with copper lights in the sun.

Colours that tend to sit well

Green is the opposite of red on the colour wheel, so almost any green makes red hair look deliberate: bottle green and emerald for evenings, olive and sage for daytime. Teal and peacock blue do something similar with a little more drama. Navy is a calm, dark partner for all three reds, and cream or ivory is softer than bright white beside a warm henna. Camel, tan and chocolate brown harmonise with auburn and henna in particular.

Burgundy hair, being cooler, also sits well with plum, dusky rose and grey, which can look flat beside a bright copper henna. Mustard and gold suit henna and auburn more than burgundy.

Colours that compete, and how to use them anyway

Tomato red, bright orange, rani pink and fuchsia are the shades most likely to fight with red hair, because they are strong colours close to it on the wheel. You do not have to give them up. Keep them away from the face, in the trousers or the lower part of the kameez, and wear a dupatta in one of the easier colours above. Or go fully tonal: a deep rust or wine outfit can look striking with henna because the colours clearly belong together. Our article on tonal dressing for modest outfits explains that approach.

The dupatta does most of the work

Because the dupatta frames the hair and the neckline, it decides how the colours read. A green or navy dupatta can carry a whole outfit in a colour that would otherwise compete; how you wear it matters too, and dupatta styling for every neckline has ideas. If you cover your hair, the scarf takes the place of the hair in this question, and the same contrast ideas apply to it.

Common questions

Can I wear red if I have henna in my hair?

Yes. Either choose a red that is clearly deeper or clearly different, such as wine or maroon, or keep the red away from your face and wear a dupatta in green, navy or cream.

Does black work with burgundy or auburn hair?

It can. Black gives a strong frame, which some people love. Navy, charcoal or chocolate brown give a similar effect with a softer edge if black feels too stark in daylight.

Does it matter if my henna fades between applications?

A little. As henna fades it usually turns more orange and lighter, so colours that suited the fresh shade may look slightly different a few weeks later. Greens, navy and cream tend to work at both stages.
