Comfortable kameez for older women: what to ask for

Comfortable clothes for older women start with fit: easy openings, room at the upper back and tummy, soft waists and safe lengths. What to ask for in a kameez order.

Comfort comes from the cut, not a bigger size

The most comfortable kameez for an older woman is one cut to her body as it is now, with an easy way in and out, room where her shape has changed, a soft waist on the trousers and lengths that clear the floor. Buying a size up in a shop rarely gets there, because it widens the shoulders and neck as well as the tummy.

Shapes change gently over the years: the upper back may round, the waist may thicken, and a favourite old size stops matching. If you are ordering for your mother or grandmother, measure her afresh rather than relying on what she wore years ago.

Openings that make dressing easy

Pulling a narrow kameez over the head means lifting both arms high, which not everyone enjoys. These details are worth asking for:

  • A front placket with buttons, so the kameez goes on like a shirt. Larger buttons or a shorter placket are easier to handle than a row of tiny ones; see kurta plackets and buttons.
  • A neck opening that passes the head easily, or a slit at the front if the neckline is high.
  • A little room at the wrist, so the hand slides through the sleeve without fighting a tight cuff.
  • Side-seam pockets for glasses, a phone or tissues. Adding pockets shows the options.

Room at the back and the tummy

A kameez that fits someone standing very straight can feel tight across the shoulder blades if her upper back is rounded, and the front hem may lift as the back uses up length. Measure across her back with her standing as she naturally does, not drawn up tall for the tape, and note if her back curves. At the tummy, a straight or gently A-line cut skims rather than clings, and side slits that open from the hip let the kameez part over the thighs when she sits.

Fabric plays its part. Soft lawn and cotton breathe and move; very stiff cloth or heavy embroidery across the front can feel like armour. Keep any lining light so the kameez slides rather than sticks.

Trousers: soft waists and safe lengths

For trousers, the waist matters most. A wide, soft elastic, or elastic at the back with a flat front, is easier than a thin drawstring that has to be knotted tight. A shalwar or roomy straight trousers pull on more easily than a churidar or narrow cigarette pants.

Keep the trouser hem clear of the floor in the shoes she actually wears, including house slippers, and check that a long kameez or wide trousers will not catch on a stair. Our trouser fit guide explains rise and length.

Measuring and ordering for someone else

If you are holding the tape, keep the session short and let her sit down between steps; the method in measuring with a helper works well. Alternatively, measure a kameez she loves wearing and tell us what she would change about it. A single piece is fine, and one comfortable kurta is a sensible first order before a full suit.

With custom stitching the delivery address can be hers rather than yours. Write her preferences in the notes when you request a quote; the design, measurements and delivery details are agreed in writing before cutting, and production takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, with shipping time on top.

Common questions

Which fabric is most comfortable for everyday wear?

Soft cottons such as lawn and cambric suit most of the year, being breathable and easy to wash. For cooler months, a light khaddar or a soft wool blend gives warmth without stiffness. Choose by touch: if a fabric feels scratchy in the hand, it will feel the same when worn.

Should the kameez be shorter so it does not get in the way?

It does not need to be short, but it should end where it will not be trodden on or catch when sitting down and getting up. Mid-calf or above is easy to live with; floor-length styles are better kept for occasions.

Can I use a kameez she already loves as the pattern?

Yes. Measure it laid flat and send those numbers with photos, or ask about sending it as a sample. We use them together with her body measurements to make the new one.
