Custom, customised or personalised: what each means

Custom vs personalised clothing: a name printed on a ready garment, a design changed to your choices and a piece cut to your measurements are different. Which we do.

Three different promises

Personalised clothing is a ready-made garment with something added for you, such as a name, initials or a printed picture. Customised clothing is an existing design changed to your choices, such as a different neckline or sleeve. Custom clothing, in the tailoring sense, is cut to your own measurements, sometimes from a design that is entirely yours. Shops use the words loosely, so it pays to ask which one a listing really means.

The difference matters most for fit. Only the third changes the size and shape of the garment around your body.

Personalised: added to a ready garment

The garment exists before you order, in a standard size, and the personal part is applied to it. Common methods are heat-transfer printing, direct-to-garment printing and machine embroidery of a name or monogram. Think of a hoodie with initials on the chest or a tote with a printed photo.

Personalisation can be lovely for gifts, but it does nothing for fit. A medium with your name on it is still a medium, and because it carries your name, it usually cannot be returned.

Customised: a design changed to your choices

Here the starting point is a design that already exists, and you choose from options: a round neck or a V-neck, three-quarter or full sleeves, a longer hem, a different colour. Some sellers then make it in a standard size, others to your measurements, and the listing should say which.

Customised clothing is popular because it removes guesswork. You can see the base design first and change only what you would change anyway.

Custom, made to measure and bespoke

In tailoring, custom usually means made for one person to their measurements. Within that, the trade draws a further line, mostly in men’s suits: made to measure adjusts an existing base pattern to your numbers, while bespoke drafts a new pattern from scratch and is traditionally refined over several try-on sessions. In everyday use, and in South Asian stitching, the two are often used interchangeably for any garment cut to the customer.

Custom also covers who designed it. An outfit made from your own sketch or reference photo is custom in design as well as in fit. Our comparison of made to order and made to measure looks at the timing side of the same vocabulary.

Which of these we do

Printing names or artwork onto ready-made clothes is not one of our services. If you would like initials or a name worked in embroidery, describe it or send a photo, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric or garment in the quote.

Everything we make from a written quote is cut to the measurements you send, so it is custom in the fit sense. Within that, you choose where the design comes from:

  • Customise one of our designs: start from a piece on our designs page and change the choices on the quote form, such as pieces (dupatta, waistcoat), neckline, sleeves, kameez length, trouser style, lining and embroidery level. Our guide to customising one of our designs goes through them, and you can start a customise quote from there.
  • Send your own design: a reference photo, a sketch or a written description, made with Send Your Design.
  • Embroidery on your own piece: embroidery on your own fabric or on a garment you already own, quoted individually after we confirm it is suitable. See custom embroidery.

Common questions

Is bespoke the same as made to measure?

In men’s tailoring they differ: made to measure adjusts a base pattern, while bespoke drafts a new one for you. In everyday speech, and for most women’s clothing, both simply mean a garment cut to your measurements.

Can I have a name embroidered on a kurta I already own?

Embroidery on a garment you already own is offered and quoted individually once we have confirmed the garment is suitable. Describe the lettering you want and we confirm what is possible in your quote.

Can customised clothing be returned?

It depends on the seller, but anything changed or made for one person is usually harder to return than stock. For our orders, a cancellation before cutting is refunded minus the cost of any fabric already bought, and there is no refund once cutting has started.
