Custom design mistakes to avoid before you order
The custom design mistakes that cause disappointment, from too many focal points and photo-based lengths to forgetting the back, and how to avoid each one.
InspirationSmall mistakes, big differences
Most disappointing custom outfits are not badly made; they are well made to a brief that left something out. The common custom design mistakes are easy to avoid once you know them: too many competing details, lengths taken from a photo, a fabric that cannot do what the design asks, a forgotten back view, and approving a written design without reading it properly. Here are the ones worth checking before you send anything.
Design mistakes
- Too many focal points. An embroidered neckline, puffed sleeves, a flared hem and a lace border all at once fight each other. Choose one star and let the rest support it.
- Copying the model’s lengths. A photo has no scale. Give lengths in centimetres or inches, measured on you.
- Forgetting the back. Back neck, fastenings and ties often only appear in a second photo. Say what you want there.
- Ignoring how you live. Wide sleeves in a kitchen, a tight kameez for floor seating, a heavy dupatta on a commute. Design for the day, not the photo.
- Unbalanced volume. A full kameez over very full trousers can overwhelm. See our guide to mixing details without clashing.
Fabric mistakes
- Asking a fabric to do the impossible. A crisp collar in soft chiffon, or a deep flare in stiff cotton, will not behave like the photo.
- Forgetting lining. Pale lawn, chiffon and net often need it. Our guide on whether a kameez needs lining explains when.
- Not checking quantity. Long, flared or directional-print designs use more fabric. With Stitching Only, we confirm your fabric is suitable and sufficient before you post it, so wait for that confirmation.
- Judging colour from a screen. Colours can look slightly different from photos. Use daylight photos of real fabric.
Ordering mistakes
- Measuring in a hurry. Most fit problems start with a rushed tape. Take ten calm minutes with the size guide, or choose help with measuring on the form.
- Leaving it too late. Making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment, and shipping is added after that. Start early for any occasion; we do not take rush orders.
- Posting fabric before it is confirmed. For Stitching Only, wait until we have confirmed the fabric and the sending arrangements.
- Skimming the written design. Your quote sets out the agreed design and measurements. Read it line by line against your references before you approve.
How to check your brief
Before you send, read your notes as if you were the maker. Could any line be read two ways? Is every piece described, including trousers and dupatta? Are lengths given as numbers? Is it clear which single detail matters most? If you can answer yes, the brief is ready.
Then upload it on the custom quote form. If something in it will not work in your fabric or your size, we tell you and suggest an alternative before you pay. Our design approval guide explains what is confirmed with you before cutting.
If you are ordering from abroad
Everything is made in Pakistan and shipped to you, so the written brief and quote do all the work. There is no local studio to pop into, which makes a clear brief even more valuable. The Send Your Design service explains the steps, and if you live in Ireland, the Ireland custom design page covers quotes in euros, US dollars or pounds, with delivery and import charges included.
Common questions
What is the most common mistake when designing a custom outfit?
Taking lengths from a photo. A model’s height changes where every hem, sleeve and slit falls, so give each length as a measurement taken on you.
What happens if my design will not work in my fabric?
We tell you before you pay and suggest an alternative, such as a different detail or a lining. Nothing is cut until you have agreed the design in writing.
Can I change the design after I have paid?
Talk to us as soon as possible. Once cutting has started the design cannot be changed and there is no refund, so check the written design carefully before you approve it.
