A dress-extender slip: adding length to a short dress

A dress extender slip is a separate under-layer with a finished hem that shows below a dress or kurta that is too short. What types exist and how to order one.

What an extender slip is

A dress-extender slip is an under-layer, either a half-slip on a waistband or a full slip with straps or sleeves, cut longer than the garment on top so that its finished hem shows below. It makes a short dress or kurta longer without touching the original, and it also stops a sheer skirt from being see-through.

Because the slip is a separate, new garment, it needs no alteration to the dress. The same slip can extend several pieces, which makes it a useful thing to own if you buy a lot of clothes that are shorter than you would like.

Half-slip or full slip?

Which one you need depends on what the top garment lacks: only length, or also cover at the body.

  • Half-slip. Sits at the waist on elastic or a drawstring. Right when the dress is opaque but too short, or when you are lengthening a kurta to wear as a dress.
  • Full slip. Hangs from the shoulders, so it also covers a sheer bodice or a low back. Ask for straps, a vest top or short sleeves depending on what shows.
  • Slip with sleeves. A fine, close full-length sleeve worn under a sleeveless or short-sleeved dress gives full arm cover in one layer.

Making the visible hem look deliberate

The part of the slip that shows is part of the outfit, so treat it as a design detail rather than an accident. A narrow strip just peeking out tends to look like a slipped lining; a clear band of a hand’s width or more looks planned.

Popular finishes are a lace edge, a tiered frill, a scalloped hem or a band of contrast fabric. Matching the slip to the dress colour gives a seamless longer dress; matching it to your trousers or shoes links the outfit from top to toe. Our guide to piping, lace and trims shows the edgings that work well as a visible hem. Lace and borders are offered only on outfits we stitch, so ask about the finish when you request the slip itself.

Measuring and fabric

Measure the waist where the slip will sit, under the waist of the dress, and your hip. For the length, measure from that waistline to where you want the slip hem to end, not to where the dress ends. Tell us the width of the dress hem too: the slip should hang a little narrower so it stays hidden inside the skirt until it emerges at the bottom. If the dress has side slits, mention their height, because the slip may need slits of its own.

Choose a soft, opaque fabric that does not cling: a fine cotton or lawn for warm weather, or a smooth lining fabric that lets the dress slide over it. Our guide to non see-through fabrics explains how to test opacity in daylight.

Ordering a slip

We do not alter existing clothes, but a slip is a new garment, and single pieces are welcome; see ordering a single piece. Send a photo of the dress or kurta you want to extend, your measurements and the finish you would like through custom stitching. Request a quote and we confirm what is possible on the fabric and design before anything is cut.

Common questions

Will an extender slip show through a sheer dress?

Yes, its colour and outline will show through a sheer skirt, which is often the point. Choose a colour that matches or complements the dress so the layers look intended.

Can one slip be worn under several dresses?

Usually. A slip in a neutral colour such as white, black, beige or navy, cut long enough for your longest-wearing dress, works under many pieces of a similar width.

Is a slip better than having the dress lengthened?

Often a dress has no spare fabric in the hem to let down, so lengthening it is not possible. A slip adds length without changing the dress at all.
