Fitting tips for petite women: proportions, lengths and cuts
Fitting a kameez or kurta on a petite frame: shoulders, armholes, waist position, sleeves, slits, border scale and trousers, so the outfit fits you, not a size.
InspirationPetite is about proportion, not size
Petite describes height and proportion, not dress size: a petite woman can be a UK 6 or a UK 20. Most UK retailers count petite as around 160 cm (5 ft 3 in) and under, and ready-made clothes in standard sizes are cut for someone taller. That is why shoulder seams slip off, armholes gape and a kameez meant to reach the knee ends at mid-calf.
Our kameez length guide covers which lengths suit a petite height. This post looks at everything else: the fit points and design choices that make a made-to-measure outfit look as if it was cut for you, because it was.
The fit points that matter most
- Shoulders: petite frames often have narrower shoulders, and a seam that sits past your shoulder bone makes the whole kameez look borrowed. Measure across the back carefully, or take it from a kameez that fits.
- Armhole depth: a standard armhole can sit too low on a shorter torso, gaping at the side and restricting your arms. An armhole measurement, or a kameez that fits, fixes it.
- Waist position: the distance from shoulder to waist is often shorter. On a fitted or anarkali-style kameez, the shaping should sit at your waist, not below it. Measure from the shoulder beside the neck down to your natural waist and add it in the notes.
- Bust darts: they should point to the fullest part of the bust, which on a shorter torso often sits higher than a standard pattern assumes.
- Sleeves: standard sleeves are often too long. Measure your own, and consider three-quarter sleeves ending mid-forearm.
Cuts and details that keep proportions balanced
- Side slits: a slit that starts at the hip on a tall woman can start at mid-thigh on you. Say where on your body you want it to begin. Our guide to side slits and hemlines covers the options.
- Border scale: a deep hem border takes up a larger share of a shorter kameez and can dominate. Ask whether it could go on the sleeves or dupatta instead; we confirm from photos what the fabric allows.
- Vertical lines: a V or notched neckline, a front placket, or one colour running from kameez to trousers all lengthen the figure.
- Volume: very full sleeves, deep Patiala pleats and wide palazzos can swamp a small frame. Straight trousers, cigarette pants or a narrower palazzo usually sit better, and a Patiala works best under a short kurta.
- Waist definition: a lightly shaped kameez or a short kurta shows where your waist is, so a small frame does not disappear in fabric.
Trousers and dupattas
Trouser length is often where ready-made clothes let petite women down. Measure from where you wear the waistband to where you want the hem, in the shoes you wear most. A shorter rise also stops straight trousers sagging at the seat; our trouser fit guide explains how to measure it.
A full-length dupatta can feel like a lot of fabric on a petite frame. If your outfit includes a dupatta whose edges are being finished, it can often be shortened at the same time; if the ends carry a woven or printed border, send photos with your quote request and we check what is possible. Our dupatta finishing ideas show the edge options.
Getting it right on the form
On the stitching quote form, add your height: it is optional on the size guide, but especially helpful for petite fits. If you have a kameez that fits well at the shoulders and armholes, measure it, or offer to send it and we confirm how before you post anything. And note anything ready-made clothes always get wrong for you, such as “sleeves always too long” or “armholes gape”.
If you own a ready-made suit that is almost right, many petite fixes are straightforward jobs for a local tailor: shortening the kameez, sleeves and trousers, and taking in at the sides. Alterations to existing garments are not one of our services, but our guide to altering a ready-made suit explains what to ask for. For a new outfit cut to your proportions from the start, see the custom stitching page or start a quote.
Common questions
What height counts as petite?
Most UK retailers treat around 160 cm (5 ft 3 in) and under as petite. Petite is about height and proportion rather than dress size, so it applies at any size.
Can a standard unstitched suit be stitched for a petite woman?
Yes, and there is usually fabric to spare, because a shorter kameez and trousers use less. A deep hem border may need some thought on a shorter kameez, so send photos and we suggest where it could go.
Which trousers suit a petite frame?
Straight trousers, cigarette pants and narrower palazzos usually suit a petite frame best, cut to your own length. Very full Patiala or wide palazzo styles can overwhelm a small frame unless they are worn with a short kurta.
