How long should your kameez be? Choosing the right length for your height

How to choose kameez and kurta length for petite and tall figures, from hip to calf length, how to pair each length with trousers, and how to measure your length.

The four common lengths

Kameez and kurta lengths are easiest to talk about by where they end on the body, because the same number of centimetres sits very differently on someone who is 152 cm tall and someone who is 178 cm.

  • Hip length: ends around the hip bone or just below. The short kurti or tunic look, often worn with jeans, palazzos or straight trousers.
  • Thigh length: ends mid-thigh. A relaxed everyday length that works with most trousers.
  • Knee length: ends at, just above or just below the knee. The classic kameez length and the easiest to wear.
  • Calf length: ends mid-calf. Long, elegant and fashionable, usually with side slits for movement.

Kameez length if you are petite

Most UK retailers count petite as around 160 cm (5 ft 3 in) and under. On a petite frame a very long kameez can swallow the legs, so the aim is to show enough of them to keep your proportions balanced.

  • Knee length or just above is the most reliable choice for a kameez.
  • Thigh length kurtas look fresh with straight or cigarette trousers.
  • Calf length can work if the kameez is slim, the slits are fairly high, and the trousers are slim and in the same or a similar colour, which gives one long line.
  • Keep volume in check: very wide palazzos, deep Patiala pleats and large-scale borders can overwhelm a small frame; a smaller print or narrower border sits better.
  • Lengthening details: a V or notched neckline and three-quarter sleeves add length to the upper body.

Kameez length if you are tall

For tall women, generally from about 173 cm (5 ft 8 in) upwards, the problem is the opposite: ready-made kameez in standard sizes often end higher than the design intended, and sleeves can look short. Made to measure solves this, and a long kameez is one of the best looks on a tall frame.

  • Calf length is striking with cigarette pants, churidar or narrow straight trousers.
  • Knee length with a shalwar or straight trousers is a classic that never looks too short once it is cut to your own measurement.
  • Short kurtas work well too, since you have the leg length to carry palazzo, tulip and dhoti styles.
  • Check the fabric: a standard unstitched kameez piece is designed around an average height. A calf-length kameez with full sleeves on a tall wearer can run short, so send us a photo of the label and your height before you cut or buy.

Pairing length with trousers

Length and trouser style work together, and a simple rule covers most outfits: the longer the kameez, the slimmer the trousers. Side slits matter too. On a knee or calf-length kameez they let you walk and sit comfortably, and they usually start around the hip; tell us if you want them higher or lower. Our trouser styles guide covers each style in detail.

  • Hip and thigh length: palazzo, tulip, dhoti style, Patiala, straight trousers or jeans.
  • Knee length: shalwar, straight trousers or cigarette pants.
  • Calf length: cigarette pants, churidar or narrow straight trousers.

Measuring the length you want

Kameez length is measured from the highest point of the shoulder, right beside the neck, straight down to where you want the hem to sit. Stand straight, look ahead rather than down, and ask someone to hold the tape if you can. Our measuring guide walks through all eleven measurements, and the size guide shows where each one is taken.

The easiest route is to measure a kameez you already like the length of: lay it flat and measure from the shoulder seam beside the neck to the hem. Think about the shoes you will wear with it, since heels change how a long kameez and its trousers fall. Then add the number to the stitching quote form, or choose “advise me” and we suggest a length for your height and the fabric you send. The custom stitching page explains the rest.

Common questions

What kameez length suits a petite woman?

Knee length or just above usually suits a petite woman best, because it shows enough leg to keep your proportions balanced. Thigh-length kurtas with straight or cigarette trousers also work well, and a long kameez can too if the trousers are slim and in a matching colour.

Is a standard unstitched suit long enough for a calf-length kameez?

Often, but not always. Many kameez pieces allow a knee to calf length with sleeves, but a tall wearer wanting calf length and full sleeves may run short. Send a photo of the fabric label and tell us your height, and we confirm before cutting.

Where do I measure kameez length from?

From the highest point of the shoulder, next to the neck, straight down to where you want the hem. Measuring a kameez you already like is the simplest way to get a length you know works.
