High neck or collar on a kameez: the difference
High neck kameez or band collar? A high neck rises from the body itself with a back opening; a collar is a separate stand, usually open at the front. How each wears.
InspirationPart of the body, or added on top
A high neck is a neckline where the front and back of the kameez themselves rise up round the throat, so there is no separate collar piece and the garment usually opens at the back with a zip or a button. A band collar, often called a ban or mandarin collar, is a separate strip of fabric stitched onto a round neckline so it stands up, and it usually opens at the front through a placket or a slit.
From a distance both look like a closed neck. Close up, and in wear, they feel quite different.
How a high neck is built
The neckline is drafted upwards from the shoulders, either as a soft funnel that follows the curve of the neck or as a close round neck with a short stand cut in one with the body. Because there is no front opening, the head has to pass through somewhere else: a back zip, a keyhole fastened with a button at the back neck, or occasionally a side opening. Our zip article compares those choices. The inside is finished with a facing, which keeps the edge smooth against the skin.
How a band collar is built
A band collar is a narrow strip, cut double and usually stiffened lightly, attached to a round neckline. It sits upright a little away from the neck and ends at the front, either meeting edge to edge or leaving a small gap above a buttoned placket. Because the opening is at the front, nothing is needed at the back. See the band collar page for heights and finishes, and collar styles for kurtas for its relatives.
Side by side in daily wear
These are the differences you notice once you are wearing one.
- Getting dressed: a collar opens at the front, so it goes on easily; a high neck relies on a back fastening, which can be awkward without help unless it is a long zip.
- Closeness: a high neck hugs the throat; a collar stands slightly away from it, which many people find less restrictive.
- Warmth: a high neck keeps the neck warmer, since there is no gap at the front.
- Under a hijab: a soft high neck lies flat under a scarf and keeps the neck covered if the scarf shifts. A stiff collar can push the scarf outwards and its points can rub.
- With a dupatta: both work; an open collar with the top button undone also suits a relaxed, everyday look.
- Care: a high neck needs only a light press; a collar needs ironing flat to keep its shape.
Choosing and ordering
Choose a high neck for winter, for modest outfits under a hijab and for a clean, sculpted look; choose a band collar for summer, for easy dressing and for a shirt-like finish. Band collar is an option on our quote form. A high neck is a design to describe: attach a photo and say how high it should rise and where it should open. Give your neck measurement for either. We confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote. Order through custom stitching and get your quote.
Common questions
Is a high neck kameez comfortable in summer?
It can feel warm, because the neck is fully covered. In hot weather, a soft, low high neck in lawn or cotton, or a band collar left open at the front, is usually more comfortable.
Can a high neck open at the front instead of the back?
Yes. A short front slit closed with a hook or a button is possible, though it changes the clean look slightly. Say which you prefer when you order.
Do I need to give my neck measurement?
Yes, for both. A high neck and a collar both sit close to the throat, so the neck measurement decides whether they feel comfortable or tight.
