Which hijab goes with a printed kameez?

What colour hijab with a printed dress or kameez? Take a plain shade from the print, either its quietest or its deepest colour, and learn when a printed scarf works.

Take one plain colour from the print

With a printed kameez, the easiest hijab is a plain one in a colour that already appears in the print. Choose either the quietest shade (usually the background or a soft secondary colour) for a blended, gentle look, or the deepest shade (often the outline or the darkest leaves) for a crisper frame around the face.

The reason it works is simple: the print already supplies the pattern, so a plain scarf next to the face gives the eye somewhere to rest, and repeating a colour from the print makes the two look chosen together rather than thrown on.

Quietest shade or deepest shade?

Both are right; they just give different results. Picking the quietest colour lets the print stay the star. A cream hijab with a cream-ground floral, or a soft sage taken from the leaves, looks calm and suits work, errands and daytime visits.

Picking the deepest colour adds definition. A navy, maroon or bottle green hijab taken from the darkest part of the print looks more finished and holds its own at evening gatherings. It also links neatly to trousers in the same deep colour.

Finding the colours is easier than it sounds:

  • Look at the print from a few steps back, or half-close your eyes: the shades that remain are the strong ones.
  • Check the selvedge. Many printed fabrics have a row of small colour dots along the edge, one for each colour used in the print, which is a ready-made palette.
  • Zoom in on a daylight photo and note two or three colours, not just the most obvious one.

When a printed hijab can work

A printed scarf with a printed kameez is possible, but it needs more care. It tends to work when the two prints differ clearly in scale (a tiny dot or fine stripe on the hijab with a large floral kameez, or the other way round), when they share at least one colour, or when the kameez is mostly plain with a printed border or yoke. Two busy prints of the same size, side by side near the face, usually compete. Our guide to pairing printed and plain pieces covers the same idea across a whole suit.

If you wear a dupatta as well

Wearing a hijab and a dupatta together puts three things close to the face: scarf, dupatta and the kameez neckline. Keep at least one of them plain. Three easy routes:

  • Hijab and dupatta in the same plain colour, taken from the print. The tidiest option and a tonal one; see tonal dressing for modest outfits for plain suits.
  • Plain hijab, printed dupatta: the dupatta repeats the kameez print, so the hijab must be the calm piece.
  • Dupatta draped over one shoulder or the arms rather than the head, so it does not crowd the hijab. Our guide to dupatta styling shows the options.

Planning a new kameez around your hijabs

When you order a printed kameez, it helps to start from the scarves you already reach for most. If you mostly wear navy, black and cream hijabs, choose prints that contain those colours and you will usually have a match. Plain trousers in the same shade as your favourite hijab frame the print top and bottom.

If you send your design or fabric to us for custom stitching, mention the hijab colours you plan to wear in your notes, and send a daylight photo of the print. Colour names vary between sellers and screens, so a photo says more than a word. Our guide to buying a plain fabric to match a print helps with the trousers and dupatta, and you can ask for a quote whenever you are ready.

Common questions

Should my hijab match my trousers or my kameez?

Either works, but matching the hijab to the trousers is a neat trick with a printed kameez: the same plain colour above and below frames the print and makes the outfit look planned.

Does a black hijab go with every print?

Usually, if the print has black or very dark outlines in it. With soft pastel prints a black hijab can look heavy, and navy, charcoal or a deep shade from the print often sits more gently.

Is a white or cream hijab a safe choice with prints?

It sits well with prints on a pale or cream background. With a deep-coloured print, a white hijab stands out strongly, which can look fresh in summer but less blended.
