How to stop an abaya clinging to your legs

An abaya clinging to your legs has one of four causes: static, very light cloth, damp heat or wind. Here is a fix for each, on the day and when you order.

First, work out why it clings

To stop an abaya clinging, put a smooth layer of natural fibre or an anti-static slip between it and your legs, and add a little moisture to the cloth and your skin. That cures the commonest cause, static. If the cling carries on, the cause is something else: cloth that is too light, damp heat or wind, and each has its own fix.

  • Static: the cloth crackles, sticks to tights or trousers and is worse in dry, heated or air-conditioned rooms.
  • Light cloth: there is no crackle, but the fabric follows every movement and settles between your knees.
  • Damp heat: the cloth sticks to bare skin where you are warm, mainly outdoors in summer.
  • Wind: it only happens outside, and only on the side the wind comes from.

Static: the dry-air problem

Static builds when two synthetic fabrics rub together in dry air, which is why a polyester abaya over polyester trousers or tights is the classic case. For today:

  • Change the underlayer to cotton or viscose, or wear a slip sold as anti-static.
  • Moisturise your legs. Dry skin makes static worse.
  • Run a metal hanger over the inside of the abaya, or lightly mist the inside with water.
  • Use an anti-static spray on the inside, testing it on a hidden spot first.
  • In the wash, a little fabric conditioner helps, as does drying on a hanger instead of in a hot tumble dryer.

Cloth that is simply too light

Some abayas cling with no static at all, because the fabric weighs so little that it cannot hang away from the body. Every step pushes it against your legs and it stays there. The fix on the day is a slip or inner dress with a smooth surface, so the abaya glides over it instead of gripping. The lasting fix is weight: a denser cloth, a lining, or a deeper hem that adds a little weight at the bottom edge. More room through the hip and thigh helps as well, because cloth that is not stretched over the body has a chance to fall straight.

Damp heat and wind

In humid weather the problem is moisture, not electricity: smooth synthetic cloth sticks to warm, damp skin. Put an absorbent layer between the two. Light cotton trousers or a cotton inner dress take up sweat that polyester cannot, and textured fabrics such as crepe touch the skin at fewer points than satin-smooth ones. For the fabric side of this, see are polyester abayas breathable and what to wear under an abaya.

Wind presses any light abaya against the body and outlines the legs, and nothing sprayed on the cloth will change that. What helps is weight and what is underneath: a mid-weight fabric, a closed or securely fastened front, and loose trousers or an inner dress, so that the outline the wind draws is that of the layer beneath.

Preventing cling when you order

If you are having an abaya made to measure, mention cling in your notes and ask about four things.

  • Fabric weight: medium, not featherlight. The abaya fabrics guide compares the options.
  • Lining: linings made from viscose-type fibres hold less static than polyester ones. Lined or unlined abaya weighs up the trade-offs.
  • Ease: a little more room at the hip so the cloth hangs free.
  • Hem: a deeper hem for weight, where the cut allows it.

What we can confirm

With Fabric + Stitching we describe the proposed fabric in your quote, so you can ask about its weight and fibre before you approve anything. Lining and hem depth are requests like any other: put them in your notes, and we confirm what is possible on your fabric and design before cutting. Winter brings its own version of the problem, which pilling, static and shine covers.

Common questions

Why does my abaya only cling in winter?

Cold air holds less moisture and indoor heating dries it further, so static charges build up instead of leaking away. Tights and thermal layers, which are usually synthetic, add friction. A cotton layer or an anti-static slip between the two solves most winter cling.

Does a dryer sheet work on an abaya?

Rubbing one over the inside can reduce static for a few hours. It leaves a light coating, so test it on a hidden area first and do not rely on it for delicate or pale fabrics.

Will lining my abaya stop it clinging?

It helps if the lining is smooth and holds little static, and it adds weight so the abaya hangs straighter. A polyester lining over polyester trousers can still cling, so the fibre of the lining matters.
