Pilling, static and shine: fixing winter fabric problems
Why winter suits pill, cling with static and go shiny after ironing, how to fix each problem at home, and the fabric and lining choices that help prevent them.
InspirationThree winter problems, three causes
Most winter fabric problems come from three causes. Pilling, the little bobbles that appear where fabric rubs, comes from friction breaking short fibres loose. Static cling comes from dry indoor air and synthetic fibres building up an electric charge. Shine comes from ironing dark or synthetic fabrics too hot or directly on the face. Each one can be fixed at home and largely prevented by the choices you make when an outfit is planned.
These problems show up most in the soft, brushed and blended fabrics sold for winter, and in homes heated against cold climates such as Calgary or northern Europe.
Pilling: why it happens
Pills form where fabric rubs against itself or something else: under the arms, at the sides where a handbag sits, across the seat and inside the thighs. Brushed fabrics such as some marina, and blends of natural and synthetic fibres, pill most, because their short fibres work loose and the strong synthetic ones hold the bobbles in place. Tightly woven fabrics with long fibres pill least.
- Remove pills with a battery fabric shaver or a fabric comb, laying the garment flat and working gently. Avoid razors, which can cut the fabric.
- Prevent them by washing inside out on a gentle cycle, not overloading the machine and avoiding the tumble dryer.
- Reduce friction by carrying bags in the hand and choosing a smooth lining where a fabric rubs against layers.
Static: why winter suits cling
Static builds when two surfaces rub in dry air, and heated homes in winter have very dry air. Polyester chiffon, georgette and polyester linings are the usual culprits, especially worn over tights or synthetic thermals. The result is a kameez that clings to your legs and a dupatta that sticks to your hair.
- Quick fixes: run a small amount of hand cream between your palms and smooth it lightly over your legs, or lightly mist the inside of the garment with water.
- Layer with natural fibres: a cotton or wool thermal builds far less static than a synthetic one.
- Add moisture to the air: a humidifier or a bowl of water near a radiator helps a room as well as your clothes.
- Choose the lining with care: viscose or cupro builds less static than polyester. Our article on lining for hot and cold climates explains the options.
Shine: the ironing mark
Shiny patches appear when an iron flattens the surface of a fabric, most often on dark cottons, khaddar, wool blends and anything synthetic, and most visibly along seams and pleats. Prevention is simple: iron on the reverse, use a press cloth on the face, and choose the lowest heat the label allows. To soften an existing shine, steam the area from a short distance and brush it gently; sometimes it lifts, though a heavy shine can be permanent.
Preventing problems when you order
A few choices at the planning stage save a lot of maintenance. Pick a tightly woven, cotton-rich winter fabric if pilling bothers you. Choose a viscose or cupro lining rather than polyester if your home is dry and warm. Ask for enough ease around the underarm and hip, because fabric under strain rubs more and pills sooner. Our guide to making your suits last longer has more habits that help.
Ordering a winter suit
With Fabric + Stitching in Canada and every other country, tell us about your winters and whether static or pilling has bothered you before, and we propose the fabric and lining with that in mind, agreeing both with you before cutting. With Stitching Only, send photos of your fabric and its label first so we can see the blend. Production takes 5 to 7 working days after approval and full payment. Common questions
Why does my marina suit pill?
Pilling comes from friction loosening short fibres, and brushed and blended fabrics such as some marina pill most. Washing inside out on a gentle cycle and avoiding the tumble dryer slows it down.
How do I stop my kameez clinging in winter?
Dry indoor air and synthetic fabrics cause static. Wear natural-fibre layers underneath, add moisture to the room, and choose a viscose or cupro lining rather than polyester.
Can shiny ironing marks be removed?
Light shine can sometimes be lifted by steaming the area from a short distance and brushing gently. Heavy shine may be permanent, so iron on the reverse or use a press cloth.
