How to style a shirt dress for work, weekends and travel

Ways to style a button-front shirt dress: belted, layered, over trousers like a long kurta, or open as a light coat, plus the fit details that stop buttons gaping.

One dress, many outfits

A button-front shirt dress is one of the most flexible pieces you can own. Worn on its own it is a simple day dress; belted it becomes smarter; over trousers it works like a long kurta; and worn open it turns into a light coat. Knowing how to style a shirt dress mostly comes down to three things: where you define the waist, what you wear underneath, and whether the buttons are done up.

Our own shirt dress comes in Emerald Green, Navy, Black, Maroon and Beige, in sizes S to XL or made to measure, so the ideas below are easy to try with it or with any shirt dress you have.

Belted, loose or tied

The waist changes the whole shape of a shirt dress.

  • Belted at the natural waist: a narrow leather belt gives a classic, put-together look for the office.
  • Tied with a fabric sash: softer and easier to sit in all day.
  • Worn loose: relaxed and cool for hot days and travel; the straight line looks modern.
  • Belted low on the hip: a looser, more casual silhouette with trainers or sandals.

Over trousers, like a long kurta

For anyone used to Pakistani clothes, wearing a shirt dress over trousers feels natural: it behaves like a long kurta with a collar. Slim straight trousers or cigarette pants keep the look neat, and wide trousers make it relaxed. Undo the bottom button or two so the dress moves when you walk, or ask for side slits when you order one made to measure. It is also a simple route to a modest outfit for work, with full coverage and no dupatta to manage.

If you like this look, our guides to kurta plackets and buttons and collar styles for kurtas show how the same details work on a kurta.

Layered and open

A shirt dress layers in both directions: things over it and the dress itself over other things. It is also a good travel piece, because one dress can cover a day of sightseeing, a dinner and the flight home with only a change of shoes and a layer. Darker shades such as navy, black and maroon hide creases and the odd mark on a long day.

  • Under a cardigan or blazer for cooler days in the office; see our work and campus ideas.
  • Open over a T-shirt and jeans as a light duster coat, with the sleeves rolled.
  • Over a slip or fine knit in winter, with tights and boots.
  • With a scarf or dupatta around the shoulders for a softer finish.

The fit details that matter

The classic problem with a ready-made shirt dress is the gap between buttons at the bust. It happens when the dress fits the waist and hips but not the chest. A made-to-measure shirt dress is cut to your bust, waist and hip measurements separately, which is the most reliable fix. Also think about sleeve length, whether you roll your sleeves or not, and the hem: knee, midi or ankle length each changes how the dress layers over trousers.

Ordering a shirt dress

Choose made to measure rather than a standard size when you order, and give your measurements in centimetres or inches. If you want a change to the design, such as a different sleeve or length, start a customisation quote and we confirm what is possible. Customers in Ireland can read how customisation works for Ireland, and those in Dublin and elsewhere receive a written quote with delivery and any import charges included. Common questions

Can you wear a shirt dress over trousers?

Yes. It works much like a long kurta. Slim or straight trousers keep it neat, and undoing the lowest buttons or adding side slits lets it move when you walk.

How do I stop a shirt dress gaping at the buttons?

Gaping usually means the dress is too tight across the bust. A made-to-measure shirt dress is cut to your bust measurement as well as your waist and hips, which prevents it.

What colours does your shirt dress come in?

Emerald Green, Navy, Black, Maroon and Beige. Colours can look slightly different on screen from the real garment.
