Initials or a name on an abaya: where it can go

Ideas for an abaya with name embroidery or initials: where it can go, how large it should be, tonal or contrast thread, lettering styles and how to request it.

Small, quiet and well placed

Initials or a name on an abaya look most refined when they are small and placed where they are found rather than announced: on a cuff, the inside of a front edge, the back neck or the edge of a pocket. Tonal thread, a shade close to the fabric, keeps the lettering subtle; a contrast thread makes it a feature.

Personalised lettering is a popular touch on an abaya given as a present or made for a milestone. It is a request like any other embroidery, and what can be stitched depends on the fabric and the size of the letters.

Where the lettering can go

Choose the spot by asking who should see it: everyone, only people close to you, or only you.

  • Cuff: the classic place for initials, on the outer edge of one sleeve. It shows when you move your hands and stays visible with a scarf on.
  • Inner front facing: lettering on the inside of the front edge appears only when an open abaya moves. It is private and very elegant.
  • Back neck: just below the collar on the inside, where a label would sit. Visible to you alone, and a lovely place for a full name or a date.
  • Pocket edge: along the top of a patch pocket or beside a side-seam pocket opening, small and slightly playful.
  • Hem corner: at the lower front corner of an open abaya, where it shows as you walk.

Size, thread and lettering style

For initials on a cuff, letters roughly 1.5 to 3 cm tall (about half an inch to just over an inch) read clearly without dominating the sleeve. A full name on the inside of a facing can be smaller. Very small letters lose their shape on textured fabrics such as crepe or jacquard, so a smooth fabric gives the crispest result.

Tonal thread, such as black on black or a shade darker than a camel fabric, gives a quiet, expensive look that catches the light only up close. Contrast thread, such as gold, ivory or a colour picked from your scarf, makes the lettering a visible detail.

Block capitals stay legible at small sizes; a flowing script looks graceful but needs a little more height to stay clear. Arabic and Urdu lettering is a beautiful choice too. For any script, send the exact spelling as an image, not typed text alone, so the letter shapes and joins are reproduced as you intend.

How to ask for it

We make abayas to measure, and lettering can be requested as part of the design. We also offer embroidery on your own garment: you send the abaya to us in Pakistan once we have confirmed it is suitable. Our article on embroidered abayas made to measure covers decorative work more broadly, and machine or hand embroidery explains the general difference between the two.

Tell us the letters or name, the placement, a rough size and the thread colour, and attach a picture of the lettering style you like in the quote form. We confirm what is possible on your fabric and design in the written quote.

Common questions

Can initials be added to an abaya I already own?

Yes, embroidery is offered on a customer’s own garment. You send it to us after we confirm the fabric and placement are suitable, and it is quoted individually.

Will lettering on a cuff wear out quickly?

Cuffs are handled and washed often, so embroidered lettering there sees more wear than elsewhere. Washing inside out, on a gentle cycle and following the label helps it last.

Is a name on an abaya a good gift idea?

It can be, if the person likes personal touches. A small placement on the inside facing or back neck is a safe choice, because it is meaningful without changing how the abaya looks to others.
