Embroidered abayas made to measure: placement and planning
How to plan an embroidered abaya made to measure: where embroidery sits on sleeves, front edges and back, a level for daily or Eid wear, and what to ask for.
InspirationEmbroidery on a made-to-measure abaya
We make abayas to measure, either with fabric we supply or with suitable fabric you send us, and embroidery can be planned into the design. An embroidered abaya made to measure lets you choose exactly how much decoration it carries, from a quiet line at the cuffs to bolder work for Eid. As with every order, the style, fabric and embroidery are things you ask for in your enquiry, and we confirm what is possible in your written quote.
Our custom abayas page covers the garment itself; this guide is about the embroidery.
Where embroidery sits on an abaya
An abaya is a long, often flowing garment, so the work tends to go where it frames the body and catches the eye as you move:
- Sleeve ends: the most popular placement; visible, easy to wear and modest.
- Front edges: a line along an open front, which outlines the garment from neck to hem.
- Neckline or yoke: a small panel at the front or back neck.
- Hem: a border that weighs the hem slightly and helps it hang.
- Back: a panel between the shoulders, which is striking in a room and photographs well.
Choosing a level
For daily wear, to work or for errands, a delicate level at the cuffs or neckline keeps the abaya practical; dense work on sleeve ends can catch on bags and car doors. For gatherings, the detailed level, at the neckline, sleeves and hem, gives a balanced, finished look. Statement work suits an Eid abaya or one kept for celebrations.
Tonal embroidery, black on black or navy on navy, is a classic choice that adds texture without breaking a modest silhouette. A contrast thread is more noticeable and pairs well with a matching scarf. Our modest dressing guide has more on balancing coverage and detail.
Weight, drape and lining
Abayas move a great deal, and the fabric’s drape is part of their character. Heavy work across a light, flowing fabric can pull it out of shape or make one area hang differently from the rest, so richer work is usually kept to edges and smaller panels on fine fabrics.
Length matters for hem work in particular. An abaya that brushes the ground wears its hem border quickly on pavements and stairs, so give us the length you want in the shoes you wear most, and consider keeping a deep border a little higher on an everyday piece.
Embroidery on the sleeves or yoke may also feel rough against the arms or the garment worn underneath. Ask about a lining or facing behind those areas; our embroidery and lining guide explains why it helps.
What to tell us
In your enquiry, cover these points so we can quote accurately:
- The style you have in mind and a photo, if you have one.
- Your measurements, including the length you want in the shoes you usually wear.
- Where the embroidery should go, and how wide or deep.
- Thread colour and whether you prefer tonal or contrast.
- Your climate, because heavy work feels different in Riyadh in summer than in a UK winter.
Starting your order
Choose abaya on the stitching quote form and pick an embellishment level. Customers in Riyadh and across the Gulf choose a quote in dollars, euros or pounds, and the Kuwait fancy work page explains ordering from Kuwait. Our custom embroidery service also covers embroidery on an abaya you already own, after we have seen photos and confirmed it is suitable.
Common questions
Do you make abayas with embroidery?
Yes. Abayas are made to measure, as Fabric + Stitching or Stitching Only, and embroidery can be planned into the design. What is possible on your chosen fabric and style is confirmed in your written quote.
Where is embroidery most practical on an everyday abaya?
At the neckline or slightly above the sleeve ends. These areas are visible but avoid the rubbing that a wide band right on the cuff edge gets from bags and desks.
Is black-on-black embroidery visible?
Yes, though subtly. Tonal work shows as texture and catches the light as you move, which is why it is a popular choice for a modest abaya that still feels special.
Can you embroider an abaya I already have?
Standalone embroidery on your own garment is offered. Send photos of the front, back and inside first, and post it only after we have confirmed it is suitable.
