Is cambric a summer or winter fabric?
Is cambric fabric for winter or summer? It is a mid-season cotton. How weight, colour and lining shift it either way, and why brands list it under different seasons.
InspirationNeither: cambric is a mid-season cotton
Cambric is a mid-season fabric. It is a closely woven cotton that is warmer than lawn and much lighter than khaddar, so it is most comfortable in spring, autumn and mild winter weather, and indoors wherever the air-conditioning is strong. You can wear it in summer if the cloth is light and the cut is loose, and in winter if you layer it.
That in-between character is the whole reason the question keeps being asked. There is no wrong month for cambric, only months when it needs a little help.
Why brands file it under different seasons
Pakistani collections follow the weather. Lawn arrives first, for the heat. Cambric tends to follow as the summer wears on or the autumn begins, under names such as mid-summer, autumn or pre-winter, and some labels keep selling it right through their winter range. None of them is mistaken.
One reason is geography. Winter in Karachi is mild enough that a cambric suit is everyday winter wear, while in Lahore, Islamabad and the north the same suit is an autumn outfit that needs a shawl by December. The other reason is that cambric is not one weight. A thin printed cambric and a dense embroidered one can feel a season apart. The cambric guide notes the same disagreement between sources.
Is cambric good for summer?
In moderate heat, yes. It absorbs moisture as any cotton does, and because it is more opaque than lawn it can usually be worn unlined, which saves a layer. Pale colours, a loose straight cut and short or three-quarter sleeves all help. As trousers under a lawn kameez, cambric is worn all summer.
In fierce heat, the kind where the air itself feels hot, lawn is noticeably cooler and cambric is better kept for evenings and indoors. In countries with gentle summers the picture reverses: for a British or northern European summer, cambric is often exactly the right weight, and lawn can feel thin. Our guide to shalwar kameez for British weather goes through the year.
Can you wear cambric in winter?
On mild winter days and in heated buildings, comfortably. In real cold it is a base to build on, not a warm fabric in itself. A lining adds warmth without changing the look, a thin thermal underneath does more, and a shawl, cardigan or coat finishes the job. If you plan to layer underneath, mention it when you order so that the measurements allow for it.
When you want warmth from the cloth alone, move up a weight to khaddar or karandi. For offices and shopping centres kept cold all year, including much of the Gulf, cambric is a steady choice in any month; see fabrics for air-conditioned offices.
Three things that shift the season
- Weight: hold it to the light. The more that comes through, the more summery the cambric.
- Colour: pale shades reflect heat and look like summer; deep shades absorb it and look like autumn.
- Lining: an unlined cambric kameez is a warm-weather piece. The same kameez fully lined is a cool-weather one.
Telling us when you will wear it
Season is worth one line in any enquiry. Say where you live and the months you have in mind, and whether you want to layer. With Fabric + Stitching that guides the fabric we propose, which is described in the written quote and agreed before cutting. With your own cambric, it guides the advice on lining. Either way, start a quote and add the dates.
Common questions
Which months is cambric worn in Pakistan?
Broadly the in-between months, when the heat has eased but real cold has not arrived, and again as winter gives way to spring. In milder cities such as Karachi it is worn through much of the winter as well.
Is cambric cooler than khaddar?
Yes, considerably. Khaddar is woven from thicker yarn and holds far more warmth. Cambric sits between lawn and khaddar, closer to lawn.
Is cambric too warm for the Gulf?
Outdoors in the hottest months, lawn is the cooler choice. Indoors under strong air-conditioning, and during the cooler part of the year, cambric is comfortable and gives more coverage.
