Fabrics for air-conditioned offices: hot commute, cold desk

Dressing for a hot commute and a cold air-conditioned office: the fabric weights, sleeve lengths and layers that keep a kurta comfortable from the car to the desk.

Dressing for an air-conditioned office

For an office kept cold by air-conditioning while the city outside is hot, the most comfortable fabrics are mid-weight cottons such as cambric, dobby and cotton blends: light enough for the commute, dense enough not to feel chilly at your desk. Add sleeves that cover the forearm and one light layer you can take off, and you can handle the swing without changing clothes.

This is a common problem in Gulf cities, in Singapore and in American offices all summer. The fabric that feels perfect on the walk from the car park can leave you shivering by mid-morning.

Why thin lawn can feel cold indoors

Fine lawn and voile are wonderful in heat precisely because air passes straight through them. In a room cooled to well below the outdoor temperature, that same openness lets cold air reach your skin. Sheer fabrics also show more under bright office lighting than they do outdoors.

A denser weave holds a thin layer of warm air against the body. That is why a cambric kurta can feel comfortable at both ends of the day, while lawn feels perfect outside and thin inside.

Fabrics that handle the swing

  • Cambric: crisp, opaque, breathable cotton that keeps its shape through long meetings.
  • Dobby and textured cottons: a little more body than lawn, with a woven texture that hides creases from sitting.
  • Cotton and linen blends: the coolness of linen with fewer creases. Pure linen suits dry heat but shows every hour at a desk.
  • Cotton silk: a gentle sheen for days with client meetings, warmer than lawn, cooler than most synthetics.
  • Lawn with a lining: if you love lawn, a lining adds the second layer the office needs, and the lining guide explains when it is worth it.

Sleeves are your thermostat

Air-conditioning is felt first on the arms. Three-quarter sleeves are a good compromise for a hot commute and a cool office, and full sleeves in a mid-weight cotton are the warmest option that still breathes. If you like to push your sleeves up outdoors, ask for a slightly wider sleeve at the elbow so it stays where you put it.

Trousers matter too. Cold air sits low in many offices, so an ankle-length straight trouser is warmer than a cropped one, and a slightly heavier cotton for the trouser than for the kameez is a quiet way to stay warm.

One layer, chosen well

Keep a layer at your desk: a fine-knit cardigan, a cotton or light wool shawl, or a dupatta in a warmer fabric than your kurta. For a cardigan to sit well over a kurta, the kurta’s armholes and sleeves should not be bulky, so mention it when you order. Our guide to armhole and shoulder fit explains why the armhole decides how layers sit.

Avoid relying on a polyester dupatta for warmth. It adds little insulation and slips off a chair.

Staying neat after hours of sitting

Office wear also has to survive sitting. Linen and fine viscose crease across the lap and the back; cambric, dobby and blends recover better. A straight or gently A-line cut with comfortable ease at the hip creases less than a tight one, because the fabric is not under strain when you sit. Our office-wear kurta guide covers the cuts and necklines that look polished.

Ordering work kurtas

Tell us on the quote form how cold your office is and how long your commute is, and we suggest a fabric weight and sleeve length to match. With Fabric + Stitching we propose fabric with photos and agree it before cutting; with Stitching Only you send your own fabric after we have seen photos of it. Several work kurtas with one set of measurements can go on one quote. Ordering from the Gulf? See stitching in Qatar or the work and campus ideas, then start a quote.

Common questions

What should I wear to a very cold office in summer?

A mid-weight cotton such as cambric with three-quarter or full sleeves, ankle-length trousers and a light layer kept at your desk. Thin lawn alone tends to feel chilly in strong air-conditioning.

Is linen good for office wear?

Linen is cool and smart but creases heavily when you sit for long periods. A cotton and linen blend gives a similar look with fewer creases.

Can a kurta be cut to wear with a cardigan?

Yes. Ask for sleeves and armholes that are not bulky so a cardigan slides on easily, and choose a kurta length that sits comfortably below the cardigan hem.
