Khaddar vs marina: how the two winter fabrics differ

Khaddar vs marina: how the textured winter cloth and the soft brushed one differ in feel, drape, bobbling and smartness, and which suits your winter.

Texture against softness

The quickest way to tell them apart is touch. Khaddar is thick and matt, with a visible, slightly uneven weave you can see from across a room. Marina is smoother and softer, with a lightly brushed surface and a more fluid drape. Both are everyday winter fabrics in Pakistani collections and both are often printed, but neither name fixes the fibre: khaddar is usually sold as cotton and sometimes as a blend, while marina is called a brushed cotton by some sources and a blend by others.

Our khaddar and marina guides describe each fabric alone, and karandi vs marina covers marina’s other common rival. Here the two softer winter staples meet head on.

How each sits on the body

Khaddar has body. A khaddar kameez stands slightly away from you, keeps a straight line and feels dense and cosy, a little like a soft blanket in the hand. That thickness is forgiving over a thermal layer and suits relaxed, simple shapes.

Marina falls closer to the body. Its brushed face feels warm and smooth on the skin and the cloth moves as you walk, which flatters an A-line kameez and wide palazzos. The same softness means necklines and plackets in marina usually need a facing or a light interfacing to keep their shape.

Bobbling, shrinking and wear

Both can pill, for slightly different reasons. Brushing raises short fibre ends on marina’s surface, and friction rolls them into little balls, so marina tends to bobble at the underarms, the side where a bag rubs and the seat of trousers. Khaddar’s thicker yarns can roughen and pill where they rub too, more so in blends. Our guide to pilling, static and shine explains how to remove bobbles safely.

Khaddar is one of the fabrics most worth pre-washing because it can shrink. A cotton-rich marina may shrink a little as well, while a synthetic-rich one usually moves less. In both cases the label is the guide, and washing inside out on a gentle cycle slows surface wear.

Which looks smarter?

Neither is a dressy fabric; for a polished winter look, karandi or a heavier linen usually reads sharper. Between these two, khaddar keeps a cleaner line and holds a press better, so a khaddar kameez with a neat collar can look tidy at work. Marina reads as relaxed and comfortable. It comes into its own at home, on weekends and on errands, and its smooth face shows the detail of a digital print well.

Choosing for your winter

Picture where you will wear the suit most and how cold it gets there. Whichever you choose, our Stitching Only service can make up a suit you already own once we have seen photos of the pieces and the label; if you would rather we supply the fabric, describe the feel you want in a quote request and we propose one in writing before cutting.

  • A cold house or outdoor errands: khaddar, for its density.
  • A heated home or office: marina, soft and warm without bulk.
  • A crisp, straight kameez: khaddar.
  • Drape, flare or palazzos: marina.
  • You dislike bobbles: a tightly woven khaddar, and a marina that is not mostly synthetic.
  • A thermal underneath: either, as long as you mention it so the ease allows for it.

Common questions

Which is warmer, khaddar or marina?

It depends more on weight and blend than on the name. A thick khaddar usually feels the denser and cosier of the two, while marina feels warm against the skin but is often a little lighter.

Which is softer, marina or khaddar?

Marina, nearly always. Its brushed surface is soft from the first wear, while khaddar starts out a little firmer and softens with washing.

Does marina need a lining?

Usually not, because it is opaque enough on its own. A lining can help a very soft marina hang smoothly, but it is not needed for warmth or coverage.
