Fabric guide
Marina Fabric: What It Is and How to Stitch It
Quick answer
Marina is a soft winter fabric with a smooth, lightly brushed feel and an easy drape. Some sources call it a brushed cotton and others a blend, so the label is the only reliable guide to its fibre. It’s warm and comfortable for everyday winter wear and suits straight, relaxed cuts.
What marina is
Marina is sold in winter collections alongside khaddar and karandi. It has a soft, slightly brushed surface and a more fluid drape than either. What it’s made of depends on who you ask: some sources describe marina as a brushed cotton, while others sell it as a blend, and blends vary. As with karandi, read the composition on the label rather than assuming it from the name.
How it feels and when to wear it
Marina feels soft and warm against the skin and drapes rather than standing away from the body. How well it breathes and how much it creases depend on the blend: a cotton-rich marina behaves more like cotton, a synthetic-rich one more like a synthetic. It’s a winter fabric, comfortable for everyday wear, errands and relaxed days at home in the colder months.
What to stitch from marina
Because it drapes, marina suits relaxed shapes more than sharp tailoring. A straight kameez or softly A-line kameez with a round neck or V-neck sits well, and its fluidity works for palazzos as well as straight trousers. A band collar needs interfacing to stand up in soft marina. Full or cuffed sleeves layer easily under a coat.
Lining and finishing
Marina is usually opaque enough to wear unlined, and a lining isn’t needed for warmth, though it can help a softer marina hang smoothly. Because the fabric is soft, necklines and plackets are faced, sometimes with a light interfacing, so they keep their shape after washing, and seams are neatened to stop fraying.
Pre-washing, shrinkage and care
Whether marina needs pre-washing depends on the blend. A cotton-rich marina can shrink a little like other cottons, so pre-wash the plain pieces if the label allows; a synthetic-rich blend usually has less to gain. When in doubt, tell us what the label says and whether you’ve washed it, and we’ll advise before cutting. See our pre-washing guide.
- Wash: cool and gentle, inside out, with a mild detergent and no bleach.
- Dry: in the shade.
- Iron: at the setting on the label, as blends vary, with embroidery pressed from the reverse.
- Store: in breathable cotton bags over the summer, not sealed plastic.
Ordering: Fabric + Stitching or Stitching Only
For Stitching Only, send photos of each marina piece and its label first; we confirm the fabric is suitable and that there’s enough for your design before you send anything. For Fabric + Stitching, tell us the colour and feel you want and how you’ll wear it; we propose fabric and agree it with you before cutting. There are no free samples. Start with the stitching quote form.
Common questions
Is marina a cotton fabric?
Sometimes. Some sources describe marina as a brushed cotton and others sell it as a blend, so check the composition on the label.
Is marina warm enough for winter?
Marina is sold as a winter fabric and feels soft and warm, but its warmth depends on the weight and blend. On colder days, layer it with a thermal and a shawl, and tell us if you want the fit to allow for layers.
