Butterfly abaya: how it drapes and who it suits
What a butterfly abaya is, how the wide cut drapes and moves, the details that change it, who it suits and what to ask for when you want one made to measure.
InspirationWhat a butterfly abaya is
A butterfly abaya is cut so the body and the sleeves are one wide piece of fabric, with no separate sleeve seam at the shoulder. The front and back are joined only part of the way up from the hem and again near the wrist, which leaves a deep drape of fabric between your arm and your side. Lift your arms and the fabric spreads like a pair of wings, which is where the name comes from.
It is one of the most fluid abaya shapes, and one of the most forgiving. Most butterfly abayas are closed and go on over the head, though open versions exist. Like every cut, it can be made to your measurements and described in your quote; we then confirm what works on your chosen fabric before cutting.
How it drapes and moves
Because there is so much width, a butterfly abaya falls in soft vertical folds when your arms are down and barely touches the body. Air moves freely underneath, so it is a favourite in hot climates, and it skims rather than clings, which many women value for modesty.
The drape depends on the fabric. Soft, fluid fabrics fall into neat folds; stiff ones stand away from the body and can look boxy at this width. Our georgette and chiffon guide explains how light fabrics behave, and we can advise on drape when we quote.
Decisions that shape a butterfly abaya
Two butterfly abayas can look quite different depending on a handful of choices. Mention these in your notes:
- Wing width: a full wingspan to the wrists, or a narrower drape for a neater look. Narrower is easier for daily tasks.
- Where the sides are joined: a join that starts higher gives more coverage at the side; a lower join gives more drape.
- The wrist: an open wrist, a stitched point, or a fitted cuff or elastic that stops the sleeve sliding up your arm.
- An inner tie or elastic: a tie stitched inside at the back waist gives a little shape without changing the outside line.
- Neckline: a round neck, a V or a keyhole with a button. See our neckline guide for shapes.
- Length: usually to the ankle or just above the floor, so the hem clears your shoes.
Who a butterfly abaya suits
Almost everyone. The width hides the waist and hips completely, so it suits curvy and slim frames alike, and it is comfortable during pregnancy. Tall women carry the full wingspan beautifully.
If you are petite, the volume can swamp you. Ask for a narrower span, a slightly higher side join and a hem that just clears the ground, which keeps the proportions balanced. Our article on choosing an abaya cut for your height and frame goes into this.
The practical drawbacks are real: wide wings can catch on door handles, trail in the sink and get in the way when you drive or carry a bag across your body. For busy days, a kimono abaya or a cut with set-in sleeves may be easier.
Butterfly, kimono or bisht?
These three are often confused. A butterfly abaya has no sleeve seam and drapes from wrist to side. A kimono abaya has wide, straight sleeves on a straight body, usually with an open front. A bisht-style abaya is a broad, cloak-like shape that opens at the front with wide arm openings and trimmed edges; our bisht-style abaya guide explains it. If you like elements of more than one, say so and send a reference photo.
Ordering a butterfly abaya
A butterfly cut uses a lot of fabric width, so the fabric matters more than usual. With Stitching Only, we confirm that your fabric is suitable and that there is enough of it before you post anything to us in Pakistan; our fabric widths guide explains why width counts. With Fabric + Stitching, we suggest and supply the fabric as part of the quote. The custom abayas page explains both routes for abayas.
Start on the Stitching Only quote form, add a photo of the butterfly style you like and note the wing width and length you prefer. If you are in Dubai, the Dubai page explains how ordering works from there. Your written quote includes delivery and any import charges, and production takes 5 to 7 working days once it is approved, paid in full and your fabric has reached us.
Common questions
Why is it called a butterfly abaya?
Because the body and sleeves are cut as one wide piece. When you raise your arms, the fabric between your wrists and your sides spreads out like wings.
Is a butterfly abaya practical for every day?
It is comfortable and cool, but the wide sleeves can catch on things and get in the way when cooking or driving. A narrower wingspan or a fitted cuff at the wrist makes it easier to live in.
Does a butterfly abaya suit petite women?
It can, with a narrower span and a hem that just clears the ground, so the volume does not overwhelm a smaller frame.
