Can a made-to-measure abaya fit without trying it on?
Yes, a made-to-measure abaya can fit without trying it on first. Which measurements carry the fit, how a reference abaya helps, and what happens if it is wrong.
InspirationYes, and abayas are easier than most garments
A made-to-measure abaya can fit well without you ever trying it on, provided the key measurements are taken carefully and agreed in writing. Abayas are one of the more forgiving garments to make at a distance, because they are cut with plenty of room over your clothes. A few numbers carry almost all of the fit, and small differences elsewhere are absorbed by the ease.
That is very different from a fitted jacket or a close bodice, where a centimetre at the waist shows. With an abaya, the risks are concentrated in a handful of places, so that is where the care goes.
The measurements that carry the fit
If you get these right, the rest follows. Our guide on how to measure for an abaya walks through each one.
- Length: from the shoulder at the side of the neck to the floor, wearing the shoes you will wear most. This is the measurement people notice first. See abaya length with your shoes.
- Shoulder width: decides whether the abaya sits on your shoulders or slides off them.
- Bust and hip: taken over the clothes you will wear underneath, so the ease is generous enough to sit, kneel and walk.
- Sleeve length: to the wrist bone with the arm slightly bent, so the sleeve stays put when you reach.
- Wrist or cuff: only if you want a cuff or a narrow sleeve end.
What stands in for trying it on
Two things do the job a mirror would otherwise do. The first is a reference abaya. If you own one that fits well, measuring it flat gives us a proven starting point, and your notes can say what you would change, such as longer sleeves or a narrower hem; see measuring an abaya you already own. The second is the written approval. Before anything is cut, the quote sets out the agreed design, fabric and measurements, and you check each number against your notes. Our page on design approval explains that step.
If you are unsure about a measurement, say so rather than guessing. A short exchange before approval is far easier than a correction afterwards, and our measuring help page covers the common doubts.
If it does not match the order
Because every abaya is made to the measurements you approve, our terms are built around that agreement. If the abaya does not match the agreed measurements or design and the mistake is ours, we correct or remake it without charging for the work. You need to report it no later than 7 days after delivery, and you pay the postage both ways. Our article on cancellations and faults sets out the full terms, including what happens if you cancel before cutting.
This is also why checking the arrival matters. Try it on with the shoes and inner clothes you measured in, then use the abaya fit checklist to compare it with the quote.
Getting started
We make abayas to measure in Pakistan, in fabric we supply or in yours, and making takes 5 to 7 working days from approval and full payment. Send your measurements, a photo of the style and, if you have one, the measurements of a reference abaya through the quote form.
Common questions
Should I send body measurements or the measurements of an abaya I own?
Both, if you can. Body measurements tell us your size, and a reference abaya shows the amount of ease and length you already like. If they seem to disagree, we ask before cutting.
What if I am between sizes or my weight changes?
A loose abaya copes with small changes better than most clothes. If you expect a change, say so in your notes and we can suggest a little more ease or an adjustable detail such as an inner tie.
Is a change of mind covered by the fault terms?
No. The fault terms cover an abaya that does not match the agreed measurements or design. That is why the written approval before cutting is the moment to change anything you are unsure about.
