Which dress colour is the most versatile?

The most versatile dress colour for most wardrobes is navy. How navy, black, beige, maroon and emerald compare for work, weekends, hijabs and seasons.

Navy, for most wardrobes

For most wardrobes the most versatile dress colour is navy, with black a close second. Navy is dark enough to look smart, soft enough for daylight and neutral enough to go with nearly every scarf, shoe and layer you already own. Black wins only if your life leans toward evenings and formal settings.

That is a judgement, not a law, and the right answer shifts with your climate, your other clothes and how you wear the dress. Here is how five common choices compare: navy, black, beige, maroon and emerald.

How the five colours compare

Each has a clear strength and a clear weak spot.

  • Navy. Works for the office, weekends and dinners. It pairs with warm and cool colours alike, hides marks and is less severe than black near the face. Its weak spot is the very formal evening, where black still has the edge.
  • Black. The dressiest and the easiest to accessorise. It shows lint, dust and deodorant marks, fades visibly with washing and can feel heavy in bright summer light.
  • Beige. Light, quiet and cool-looking, lovely in warm weather. It shows stains, may need lining and can wash out against the skin unless a stronger colour sits near the face.
  • Maroon. Rich and flattering, strongest in autumn and winter and at gatherings. It is less neutral, so it narrows your choice of scarves and layers.
  • Emerald. The most striking. It is memorable, which is a strength at an event and a limit if you want to wear the dress three times a week without anyone noticing.

Test it against your own week

Versatile means different things in different lives, so run each colour through yours.

  • Work. Navy and black pass every dress code and maroon passes most. Beige is fine if marks are not a risk in your day; emerald depends on the office.
  • Weekends. All five work. Navy and beige relax most easily with trainers and denim.
  • With a hijab. Count the scarves you own that go with the colour. Navy and black take almost any, beige needs contrast, and maroon and emerald suit a narrower set of neutrals.
  • Across seasons. Navy and black are year-round. Beige leans towards summer, maroon towards winter, and emerald sits between.
  • Laundry. Mid to dark colours forgive the most. Black shows fading and beige shows everything.

Choosing a second or third dress

Once the workhorse is chosen, the next dress should do what the first cannot. If the first is navy, a beige one covers summer and a maroon or emerald one covers occasions. If the first is black, navy is too similar to earn its place, so go to beige or a colour. Our guide to colours that suit your skin tone deals with the separate question of which shade flatters you, and the capsule wardrobe guide shows how to make a few pieces work together.

Choosing between set colour options

These five are not a random list. Our button-front shirt dress is offered in exactly these colours: emerald green, navy, black, maroon and beige. The tiered maxi dress comes in seven, including navy, black and maroon. If you are choosing one, start with the comparison above and then ask which you would be glad to put on for an ordinary Tuesday; that is usually the one that gets worn most.

For a dress in another shape or colour, send a photo through the quote form. Dresses are among the Western pieces we make to measure, as the custom stitching page explains, and the fabric and colour are confirmed in your written quote. Colours can look a little different on a screen from the cloth itself.

Common questions

Is navy or black more flattering?

It depends on your colouring. Black gives the sharpest contrast and can look harsh in daylight on some skin tones, while navy is gentler. Hold each near your face by a window and see which makes you look more rested.

What colour dress goes with everything?

No colour goes with literally everything, but navy and black come closest. Navy pairs with warm and cool colours and with both brown and black accessories, which is why it edges ahead for everyday wear.

Which colour dress should I buy first?

The one that suits most of your week. For a mix of work, errands and the occasional dinner, that is usually navy. If most of your dress occasions are evening events, choose black.
